One of the clues is gone due to construction on campus. Once the construction is done, the clues will be updated and the letterbox will be returned.

The image on this new stamp has the same subject as the stamp that went missing, but this new stamp is smaller and more detailed.

I have attended, graduated and taught at various colleges and universities in my career. To commemorate them, I have decided to make a letterbox for each of the schools. If a college has more than one campus, each campus will get a letterbox (provided I was at that campus for some classes). There are 10 schools/campuses in this series, with one of them being a mystery university.

Baker College of Owosso is where I currently teach. Giardia lamblia is a protozoan that the students had to find and recognize using their microscopes. Since Baker College doesn’t have any sports teams, mascot, or nickname, Giardia lamblia is a good as any. (Go Giardias!)

One quarter, for extra credit, I made a letterbox for the students to find. They had to complete a homework assignment to complete the clues to find the box. You, too, will have complete the homework assignment below to complete the clues.

Homework assignment.
1. Epidemiology is:
(1)the study of the distribution and determinants of disease
(2) the study of the frequency, types, and factors that influence types of illness and/or injury in groups
(3) both a body of knowledge and a method of study
(4) the study of epidemics of disease which occur in humans

a. 2,3,4
b. 1,3,4
c. 1,2,4

2. What is the most common strain of E.coli to cause hemolytic uremic syndrome?

3. What virus causes encephalitis in horses and humans and is transmitted via mosquitoes? (3 words)

4. The fungus Blastomyces dermatitidis causes a disease similar to histoplasmosis. The disease is called Gilchrist’s disease or: (3 words)

5. What virus causes encephalitis in migratory birds and humans and is transmitted via mosquitoes? (3 words)

6. The fungus Paracoccidioides brasiliensis causes a systemic mycosis called paracoccidioidomycosis. This disease is also known as: (3 words)

7. Which area of the United States is coccidioidomycosis endemic?

After completing the above, do the following:

I. Take the answer to question 1, remove the two commas between the 3 digits, then subtract the H antigen number from question 2. A = ____________

II. The first word in the answer in question 3. B = ________

III. Diphyllobotrium latum infects trout, perch and walleyed... C = ____________

IV. The first word in the answer to question 4. D = ________

V. The first word in the answer to question 5. E = _______________

VI. The first word in the answer to question 6. F = ______________

VII. The answer to question 7. G = ____________________

Now come the clues.
CLUES

1. The 2 brick Library signs form an angle. The angle points the way. Head in that direction. The number of steps that you will take is approximately “A “.

2. You will eventually reach a T.

3. Turn “B “ and keep going in that general direction. It will meander, but keep going as straight as you can.

4. You will eventually come to a tree that’s in the way. The tree trunk will have a plaque with the name “C “.

5. Head “D “ and keep going until you can go no further (unless you live on campus).

6. Turn “E “ and start walking.

7. You will come across two sets of stairs that are somewhat close together. One heads “F “, the other heads “G “. Take the one that heads “G”.

8. Follow the path. At the Y, go “E” You will see bushes and a concrete monument outside a building.

9. Follow the bushes to the “D” side of the building. The bushes on that side are bordered by a rock wall.

10. Where the rock wall meets the building is where you will find the letterbox. Hide it really well with the rocks surrounding it.
