For all the boxes planted by us go to Atlas Quest.com and search planter ECCENTRIC SUTTONS

Last Modified: May 25, 2011
Directions: Go to the town of Christmas Vally, about 66.1 miles from La Pine, Oregon. Find the road called CRACK IN THE GROUND RD. Follow the gravel road 7.2 miles and park on the left. Please be sure to use your stealth when retrieving and rehiding these boxes. This is a very popular attraction in the summer. Please leave no part of the boxes exposed. Boxes become litter to most people when they are visible. Thank you for being respectful while letterboxng. We are pretty sure this is only a mile hike, but we called it 1-3 to be on the safe side. Bring good hiking boots or closed shoes.

Crack in the Ground is believed to have formed over time during numerous earthquakes when the rock was displaced a little each time. Climb down in to the right and pick your way southeast a ways, be mindful that the ice along the bottom, which sometimes persists into the summer, is slick and a bit treacherous. Early day homesteaders are said to have stored food inside Crack in the Ground. There was no ice this year when we planted these boxes, just a Little snow in two places.

Box #1 Treasure Map - While out and about, Tink finds Hook mezmerized by a treasure map and goes in for a closer look. Clue: After you have visited Mr. and Mrs. Yuck's hut, Cross the place where we have all been told not to play, Pass through the gap, Almost immediately after sneaking between two sentries guarding the path, Find the silver well and walk over to it, Look North to find find a small golden altar guarded by two more sentries, Sneak up to the sentry on the right and search his feet. You now hold Hooks map.

Box #2 Excitement - Tink hurries to find Pan and excitedly tells him of this potential adventure. Clue: Once you have aquired the image of the map continue East where excitement awaits, When the path forks, Follow the rocks to the metal and sign in if wish, From the metal, Face South, Take about seven steps to Pans treehouse, Inside you will find Tink excitedly talking to Pan.

Box #3 Up, Up, and Away - Pan invites Wendy and the boys to join in the fun. Bring your friends too, the more the merrier. Clue - Go back to where the path forked, Fly North down the less rocky path to the large sandy area, Pause, Take in the information all around you, This Is Very Important!!!, Fly East into the earth, Fly only a short distance to a mossy shelf on your left and a smooth flowing cave to your right, Step inside, Find the largest crack, Look about 4'8" up from your feet, Find the small pointed stone, Remove it to find your friends.

Box #4 Eye Spy - Hook spys everyone coming and takes chase to stop them from interfering with his search. Clue: Continue flying East, Down some steep stairs, Fly past waterfalls of green, Fly up the hill, At the top take nine steps to a large boulder resting against the wall, Between them you will see that Hook has you in his sights.

Box #5 Victory - Hook is closing in. Clue: Hook is tracking everyone, Continue flying east, Fly upward winding to and fro, Pan stopped at the large shelf to decide witch way to go, Then Hook caught up with him at the point of the shelf where four cracks meet, There you will find Pan and Hook duking it out.

Box #6 Tick Tock - Pan is clearly winning the battle. Clue: Follow Hook to the left, After you duck, Do not crawl, Instead reach up into the crack on your left, There you will find Hook on the run.

Box #7 Greedy - That short roundish guy is sneaking around, and must be up to no good. Clue: After a good laugh, Go back out to where the path split, This time take the high road, Fly carefuly down the rock waterfall past two twins and a bar stool, Fly under a single stone arch, Then under another, Fly up a rock waterfall, Continue out into the open, Then fly Northeast along the path, As soon as you start to head North you will see one of the biggest of the little giants watching over the biggest of the tiny boulders, You will find the little guy hording his loot underneath its edge.

Box #8 Investigation - Pan and Wendy girl realize that the little guy was getting his loot from somewhere in the North then sneaking it back to his hideout. They decide to fly North to investigate. Clue: Continue flying Northwest, Fly quite a ways until shortly before the corner, Find another little giant standing across from a long pile of rocks, Go to him, Find approximately two degrees, Then go roughly twelve steps, Find the large flat ones, One on edge the other relaxed, Look under the relaxed one, What you find there will remind you of all the very important information you have gathered.

We hope you had fun, you can continue around the corner and head back to Mr. and Mrs. Yuck's house before you leave.

Green Mountain is just a few miles farther north. There’s a fire lookout there (unmanned in the winter months) and a magnificent view in all directions. Green Mountain is actually a small shield volcano that erupted shortly after Crack in the Ground began forming. From the lookout, which sits at 5,190 feet above sea level, you can see the Christmas and Fort Rock valleys as well as Diamond Peak 70 miles to the west and Wagontire Mountain 50 miles east.

Other points of interest hereabout include Derrick Cave, a spacious lava tube 22 miles north of Fort Rock; Fossil Lake, site of an ancient deep-water basin two miles east of Christmas Valley; and Lost Forest, a 9,000-acre stand of ponderosa pines and old growth junipers in an area that gets far less rainfall than it normally takes to sustain tree growth. Lost Forest is 10 miles northeast of Christmas Valley on a passable but sketchy road. All of the information about Christmas Valley and Crack in the Ground came from an artical in The Bulletin from June 2, 2009.

I would encourage every one planning to visit this area to bring your own letterbox to plant in one of these unique locations, There is so much to see and so few boxes to find. Together we can change this.
