Portage Creek Bicentennial Park
(microbox)

Note: This box was retired for a season or two. But since it was heavily visited, especially by out-of-towners, azobox has decided to give it another go.

Last confirmed: April 17, 2008

Portage Creek Bicentennial Park is a paved, linear hike/bike trail in Portage, Michigan. Clues begin at the Bicentennial Park off Milham, between Westnedge and Lovers Lane. However parking is also available at several other sites if you’re on a bike or want a longer walk (SW corner of Kilgore Rd and Lovers Lane, or, or the Celery Flats Interpretive Center, or at the Portage Public Library just north of E. Centre Ave.)
From afar: I-94 to Portage Rd, then south to E. Milham, then west to Bicentennial Park. Or I-94 to S. Westnedge Ave then south to E. Milham and east to Bicentennial Park.

This is a very heavily traveled trail and you’ll likely encounter many bikers, skaters and walkers so be alert as you approach the microbox (a “childproof” pill bottle) and complete your stamping. Observers can come upon your position very quickly.

There are lots of signs along the trail; some to tell you mileage, some to alert you to hazards, some to warn you about trail conditions, and some more to reinforce the park rules. Some of the signs are small and some are larger. And more than a few are comprised of two signboards mounted on a single post – kind of a signpost sandwich. When that is done, a small gap is created between the signboards on both sides of the post – the trail side and the ‘out’side. Keep that in mind.

Now to the letterbox:
Begin at the Bicentennial Park, or if you insist, at the Kilgore/Lovers Lane terminus. Either will work.
Travel north from the Park (or south from the Kilgore corner) until you’re able to stop and rest with Shorty. As you look across the trail, you’ll see two numbers. Subtract the smaller from the larger. Using that result, count the signs on the right hand side as you head southbound on the trail. When you reach your destination, look inside the gap on the ‘out’side.
You might want to rejoin Shorty for your stamp-in.
Again, use caution as this is a busy trail and you’re not able to see other passersby until they’re close to you.
