Sorcerer’s Stone Letterbox
(or, Hogwarts Adventure)

It’s Harry’s first year at Hogwarts
And mystery abounds!
Join Harry, Ron, and Hermione
And explore the Hogwarts grounds.
(Look out for Filch and Mrs. Norris!)

To get there, take the Hogwarts Express Bus, which leaves the Olympia Transit Center on State between Washington and Franklin Streets (Route 41 or 48, leaving every fifteen minutes on the quarter hour.) Muggles think this bus goes to The Evergreen State College, but we wizard folk know better. (It’s just a simple Enchantment Charm!) There is no snack cart service on this bus, so you might want to bring some lemon drops or Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans with you to eat on the way.

If you drive, you can ask for a free one-hour visitor’s pass at the parking booth.

Once you arrive at “Evergreen”, find the place where Madam Pince works. A hint: it’s also Hermione’s favorite place. Hermione will come along, if she can get away from those books for a while!

Leave the building through the main entrance, turn right and head toward the round Lecture Hall Building. This is where Professor Flitwick teaches charms. In the distance to the right you can see the Owlrey, with a big bird on the front. But we’re not going there today. Ron joins you from Flitwick’s class, where he was trying (unsuccessfully) to make a pineapple tap-dance across his desk.

On the far side of the Lecture Hall, you’ll find Lab 2, Potions with Professor Snape, and Lab I, Transfiguration with Professor McGonagall. Harry joins you by sneaking out of Snape’s class after a smoky explosion from Neville’s cauldron. Don’t let McGonagall catch you or you’ll lose house points! Go quietly between the Lab buildings heading southwest. (Under? Through? There’s a passway.) To your right are some interesting items Professor McGonagall has collected over the years, failed transfigurations that serve as examples to students: an attempt to change a wicker basket into a broomstick, a pig transformed into a giant wooden block of swiss cheese, and an accident involving a unicycle and a windchime. Look for a while, then continue west uphill to the paved trail.

Off the pavement to your right is a dirt trail leading into the Forbidden Forest. Thanks to a protecting spell, you’ll be perfectly safe as long as you do not stray from the path. It is well-defined and clearly maintained. Do watch for tree roots and stones, however, as these can slip past even the best spells. This trail goes on for a while, and is a very pretty walk. Keep an eye peeled for Centaurs.

After a while, you’ll see a clearing ahead. You’ll see Professor Sprout’s greenhouse, and Hagrid’s garden. Follow the trail along the fence. Under the trees are Hagrid’s chickens. I think his favorites are the ones with feathery feet. (Fang’s favorites are any that he gets to chase out of the garden!) Ahead and uphill a bit is Hagrid’s hut. It’s a bit fancier than you expected, isn’t it? It’s just another enchantment to fool the Muggles.

It’s too busy here for a secret, so explore for a while and then head back the way you came. Around the first corner and up about 100 yards on the left is a giant dead tree, still standing. (Look up!) In front of it is a chunk of stump, mossy and green. Look behind it on your left side. Tucked underneath is The Sorcerer’s Stone.

Have fun finding this one! Contact philospeed@yahoo.com and let me know what you think. Watch for more HP boxes in the future.
