An enjoyable ride in the (back) country.
A good chance to hide some boxes.
Hand carved stamp

An interesting trip on a well maintained dirt road. suitable for high slung passenger cars in dry weather. The route reaches back country towns of Harshaw,Mowry,Washington Camp and Lochiel if you decide to do the loop.
To begin. Turn off Rte.82 at the post office on the north end of Patagonia. If you have an odometer set it at zero. Head east and turn left on Harshaw Ave which changes to Harshaw Road Stay on the hard road and follow the signs to Harshaw, Mowry, etc. At 3.2 miles bear right on F.S. 58. Right at 6.1 miles on F.S. 49. The ghost town of Harshaw is at mile 8. There is an interesting cemetery on the right and an adobe ruin on the left. Turn left and park to explore the remains. As you examine the hieroglyphics on the east wall turn around and you will see a clump of trees. The box is there under a couple of rocks and debris. There are a couple of maps in the box showing the loop. If you are the first you can take one with you but copy it if you can so others can follow the route if they want to. The side trip to Lochiel isn’t recommended and may be stopped by the B.P if the “tourists” are active. It is also a trip for SUVs.
At mile 12.8 a side road goes to Mowry. About ¼ mile round trip with not much left to see. At mile 16.6 Rte 49 intersects with Rte 61. Straight to Lochiel is not recommended. A hard right on 61 begins an honest to goodness mountain road. Rough, narrow with some tight areas but well worth the views as you descend the mountain. Stay on 61 to Rte 82. Left to Nogales, right to Patagonia or straight on River Road toward I-19.
Let us know if you take the whole loop and the conditions. We will be doing it again soon. This is a good all day trip but you should allow at least 1-2 hours for the loop from Patagonia to 82.
