The Reunion
July 1 st, 1863
Gettysburg, Pennsylvania

The 24th Michigan of the Iron Brigade was among the first Federal Regiments to arrive at Gettysburg. They were ordered to move east to Cemetery Ridge, but the runner who relayed the orders had a heavy German accent. This caused the officers of the 24th to believe they were ordered to hold SEMINARY ridge instead of CEMETRY ridge. This simple error placed the 24th south west of Gettysburg instead of south east with the rest of the Federal lines.

Being out of place put the 24th in a precarious position and they soon found themselves under intense attack from the 26th North Carolina regiment. For several hours the two regiments faced each other from a distance of less than one hundred feet.

Both regiments were decimated. Eventually the 24th Michigan was forced to retreat when they ran out of ammunition. Charles McConnell would fire the 24th’s last shot on Seminary Ridge. As he was loading his rifle a nearby Lieutenant urged him on by telling him to make the last shot count.

McConnell aimed for the man holding the 26th’s battle flag. A moment after he fired he saw the man and the flag go down. Convinced that he had killed the standard bearer, McConnell retreated back through Gettysburg with the rest of the 24th completely unaware of the surprise that was in store for him years later.

Clues:

After Stingers continue east. At the intersection continue east. The wood chip trail will turn to gravel. At the next intersection go left. The next intersection will be beneath a high power electrical tower. From the intersection marker head toward the trees at 310°. Look for a low, rotting stump at the tree line.
