Where the Butterflies Are

Butterflies require sunlight, along with a food/moisture source, as well as places to perch. So, look for them in open areas with a diverse plant community nearby. Park trails are very good for encountering butterflies. Spokane’s Centennial trial has flowering plants along its length. Old logging roads are a good bet. If the area is damp from recent rains so much the better, as on warm, sunny days this mineral source will attract many species, some which normally spend much of their time in tree-tops.
Go East on I 90 take the Liberty Lake exit turn left on Harvard rd. Cross the new bridge over the Spokane river turn on to Euclid which turns in to the River road. You are now traveling alongside Spokane river, you will come to a place to park on the river side of the street .A sigh will say Murray road, park and look for two brown poles in the ground. Also there will be a sign that says Riverside state park. You will now start your butterfly walk, to the left you will see the river ahead of you, on your right you will see an old tree that has broken many times. Continue on down the trail, stay to the left by the river .Now you have to go left or right you pick both will get you there. Off to the left is a nice place to dip your feet in the river (summer time). Now to the west is two very large rocks you are not there yet .Go to the log its about 20 feet long, you want the south end, now look to the river there is a big tree at the base you will find your butterfly. There are flat rocks at the base of the tree, please put back so that the box is not visible to passerbys.
