School House #18
At one time the town of Westmoreland, NY had 17 one room schoolhouses. Most of these are now gone, or turned into residences. In 1986, Beverly Zingerline and her husband, Steven, built Schoolhouse #18 in their back yard on Dix Road. Beverly then visited antique shops, garage sales, etc. to fill the schoolhouse with books, desks, and school supplies appropriate to the early 1900’s. Over the years, many school and community groups were welcomed to the school by Beverly. The schoolhouse was featured in the September 1988 issue of Country Living magazine.
After Beverly passed away her estate gave the school to the Westmoreland Historical Society. In 2006 the Society moved the building to its present location. It is open for visits and tours upon request.
Be sure to peek inside the windows to see all the artifacts that Bev put in the school. If you would like to go inside, contact a Historical Society member, and arrange a time.
To get to the schoolhouse from Rome, take Route 69 east to the Stanwix Heights (Rte. 233) exit. At the light turn right onto Route 233. Continue until you reach the village of Westmoreland. At the second light in Westmoreland (you will see a Nice ‘N Easy on the corner) turn left onto Main Street. After crossing the bridge over Dean’s Creek, turn right onto Station Street. The schoolhouse is on your right.
From Utica take Route 5 to the intersection of Rte. 233. Turn right onto Rte. 233. Go to next stop light in Westmoreland. Turn right onto Main Street. Cross bridge over Dean’s Creek, then take next right onto Station Road. The Schoolhouse is on your right.
From the NYS Thruway take the exit for Westmoreland. Turn right at first light . Turn left onto Route 233 at 2nd. Light. Turn left onto Main Street at next intersection. After driving over the bridge over Dean’s Creek, take next right onto Station Road. The schoolhouse is on your right.
Behind the schoolhouse you will find an attached "outhouse". (Don’t worry, it is not used.) Under the outhouse you will find the letterbox. Please replace the letterbox carefully so that it can not be seen. There are a lot of children who visit the ballfield in back and they might get curious.
