Born in Matagorda County in 1872 and later moving to Houston, the Honorable Hortense Sparks Ward was at the forefront of the women's rights movement in Texas. She was the first woman to pass the Bar Examination in Texas, the first woman attorney in Houston, the first woman to register to vote in Harris County, and became a Special Chief Justice of the Texas Supreme Court. She continued to practice law until the death of her husband in 1939 when she retired. She died in 1944 and was buried in Hollywood Cemetery, where a Historical Marker and this letterbox honor her life.

Directions:
From I45 north of downtown, take the N. Main exit, cross N. Main, then immediately turn right into Hollywood Cemetery. Go straight about 0.2 mile, then turn left on gravel road and park by Historical Marker for Hortense Ward.

Clues:
From her grave walk south back to the main road and go right toward the cemetery entrance about 75 yards to a stone bench on left with the name KACAL. From the bench, go south 22 steps to a large stump at the fence. Microbox is in a crevice at left base under rocks. Please be discreet and replace as described.
