The Four Fairies of the San Miguel River Trail

The San Miguel River Trail is the perfect place to take a stroll, walk your dog, find a swimming hole, or ride a bike. The trail follows the San Miguel River through the town of Telluride Colorado. The River Trail is popular with the locals and is used daily all year round. The Fairies of Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer are hidden near bridges along the trail.

Each of the Fairies can be found individually or the four can be done in one reasonable hike or bike ride. The trail and the park are very busy throughout the year so please take caution to be discreet in revealing the boxes.

To find the first Fairy, begin at Telluride Town Park. If you drive there, pull into the main entrance and then walk back to the bridge you drove in on. If you walk, cross the driving bridge into the park. The letterbox is hidden on the park side of the bridge. On the east side of the bridge, sneak around the railing and scramble about half way down the rocks toward the river. Look at the steel side of the bridge and notice the vertical and horizontal I-beams. Reach behind the center vertical I-Beam in the cavern created by the highest horizontal high beam to find the Fall Fairy.
Be sure to hide it well when you are done. It needs to be centered behind the beams so it isn’t visible from the other side of the river.

The river trail runs through town park at the bridge so from there you can just jump onto the trail heading West toward town. The path meanders along the river and crosses a few streets before you catch sight of the Gondola. The Gondola provides a free ride between Telluride and Mountain Village and has amazing views. Be sure to take time to ride it while you are here. The river trail crosses under a bridge on either side of the gondola. While under the bridge that is East of the gondola (The one you come to first), stop and stand on the center line of the sidewalk blocks with your back toward the river and facing the underside of the bridge. Under the bridge there are large I-Beams. Between the floor of the bridge and the spot where the I-beams join together you will find the Winter Fairy. You need to climb up on the boulders under the bridge and look out toward the beams to find her.

Continue heading West on the River Trail and eventually you will find yourself heading out of town. The last building you pass is the Public Works and Transportation building.

Go over a cattle guard and follow the river as it winds to the right. You will pass a sign stating “Entering Uncompahgre National Forest.” Stay left to stay on the USDA Trail and avoid the area to the right labeled “Warning Mill Tailings Containing Lead.”

You will come to a cross in the road where the River Trail continues West and another path comes in from the North via a bridge to connect with the River Trail. Walk to the bridge, but don’t cross it, and notice the poles along the West side of the bridge. Between the first two poles there is a Fairy hiding under a rock. Be sure to hide her well when you are done.

Continue heading West again and pass a sign that says “Leaving Uncompahgre National Forest” and another saying that you are entering the Telluride Valley Floor. Follow along the path as it winds through amazing vistas filled with aspens and evergreens. When you come to a wooden foot bridge it is time to start looking for the last fairy. Standing on the last board of the bridge, consider the path ahead as 0 degrees and look to your right 45 degrees until you spot a large aspen tree. Underneath the huge aspen snuggled up with a Colorado blue spruce is the final Fairy. Lift the closest end of the gnarly piece of old wood to find the box hidden beneath. Be sure to hide it again so that it will stay hidden from passers-by.
