Presque Isle State Harbor
Located at the base of the Presque Isle peninsula, this State of Michigan harbor offers refuge to the many pleasure boats that sail northern Lake Huron. In fact, the Pure Michigan Bayview Port Huron to Mackinac Race in mid July takes many sailboats past the harbor and many of the smaller boats stop at the harbor on their return trip. Amenities include restrooms, showers, electricity, water, pump-out, gasoline, diesel, launch, fishing pier, dog run and grills. The Portage Restaurant, a full-service restaurant, is open from late April to early October from 11am to 10pm.

Presque Isle County got its name from the boot-shaped peninsula located sixty-five miles southeast of the Straits of Mackinac. Early fur traders and Voyageurs named the area Presque Isle, French for “almost an island.”

The natural harbor and portage located here were important landmarks during the early European presence on the Great Lakes. The area was first exploited for fur and timber and then later for limestone. Limestone mining continues to occupy a central place in the economy with massive quarries south of the harbor close to Grand Lake and north in Roger’s City. Vacationers enjoying the history of the two lighthouses (Old Presque Isle and New Presque Isle light houses) and the natural beauty of the many parks (particularly Thompson Harbor State Park) frequent the area around the harbor.
Begin your quest in the harbor parking lot, accessible by East Grand Lake Road. Northwest of the parking lot, across East Grand Lake Road is the Portage Store. Be sure to watch for on coming traffic as you cross. In the parking lot is a blue historical sign.
The sign tells some about the Ojibwe people who traveled this areas and the meaning of the term Anishinaabe. According to Wikkipedia The meaning of Anishinaabe is "First-" or "Original-Peoples". Another definition refers to "the good humans", or good people, meaning those who are on the right road/path given to them by the Creator or Gitchi-manitou (Great Spirit). The Anishinaabe peoples included three tribes, the Ojibwe (Chippewa) Ottawa and Potawatomi peoples, called the Council of Three Fires.
Early Native Americans living in the area were primarily nomadic, using the land as hunting and fishing grounds
After you read the sign, look behind it at the black mailbox copy down the 4 digit number on the box.
You might wish to take a moment and visit the Portage store and enjoy some ice cream.
Cross back to the Harbor side, taking care to watch for traffic. Walk toward the harbor and onto the left most (northern) dock.
Each dock includes boat slips, which are numbered. Write down the three digit number of the last slip on the left side of the northern dock.
Take the last two numbers from the mailbox and subtract from this the first two numbers of the boat slip. Remember that number.
Walk back to the harbor and turn right. Follow the path around the north side of the harbor.
Continue along the path. When it tees turn right (south west) onto the harbor breakwall.
The breakwall is made up of large limestone boulders, a concrete walkway and blue steel guardrails. A one-foot opening separates the guardrails from one another. Counting each guardrail from the start of the walkway on the lake Huron side, go down to the end of guardrail specified using the calculation of the mailbox and boat slip. Carefully step between the opening between the guardrail and the walkway leading down to the fishing platform. Look down and you will see some darker stones against the concrete walkway. Carefully shift the three stones and find the box beneath.
(If you are walking at night, stop and look back up the walkway to the northeast when you are between the 37th and 39th rails. You may see the Ghost Light in the Old Presque Isle lighthouse. Although the US Coast Guard has disconnected all electricity to the light, a light can still be see from the top of the house. The light, it is said, is lit by the ghost of George Parris, one of the last keepers of the house.)
