Coal by Truck

Have you ever wondered where your electricity comes from? Or how it is made? Traveling north on Rt. 62 from Point Pleasant, W. Va. to Mount Alto, W. Va. you will pass four coal-fired power plants, two on the Ohio side of the Ohio River and two on the West Virginia side. You will also pass a hydroelectric plant as well.

As you might imagine, it takes many, many tons of coal to continuously generate electricity at a coal-fired power plant. So, how does all that coal get to the power plants? Well, a few plants have coal mines so close to the plant that a series of conveyor belts moves the coal from the mine to the plant. Most, however use other methods. One that is not used so much in this area is dump truck, though you do see coal hauled by truck not far from here, particularly in southern West Virginia and Kentucky.

Clues:

To find the “Coal by Truck” letterbox, travel north of New Haven and Letart in Mason County, W.Va. watching for the mile marker signs. The road will turn away from the Ohio River. Between the 49 and 50 mile markers, the road will be winding up Mount Alto. This stretch of the highway reminds me of the areas in southern West Virginia and Kentucky in which coal trucks are seen regularly. Watch for a pull out on the right where a guardrail begins and the road ahead curves to the left. What you seek is in the guardrail. If you reach Chestnut Ridge Road, you have gone too far.

Please be discreet when retrieving and rehiding and make sure all containers are resealed well. Let me know of the letterbox and contents condition and how your visit to the area was by contacting the placer.

If you started at Point Pleasant, W.Va. and wish to return, it is faster to continue north on Rt. 62 another mile or so to Mount Alto and turn right onto Rt. 2 south. (If you continue north on Rt. 62 you will reach Ripley, W.Va.) Happy Letterboxing!
