How It’s Made – Electricity - Turbine

Have you ever wondered where your electricity comes from? Or how it is made? Traveling north on Rt. 62 from Point Pleasant, W. Va. to Mount Alto, W. Va. you will pass four coal-fired power plants, two on the Ohio side of the Ohio River and two on the West Virginia side. You will also pass a hydroelectric plant as well.

Continuing a simplified coal-fired plant description, coal is pulverized into a fine powder and burned to heat water in a boiler. The resulting steam created in the boiler is channeled to spin the many blades of a turbine, much like how the wind spins a pinwheel.

This letterbox commemorates Mountaineer Plant, a 1,300 megawatt plant completed in 1980 and owned by American Electric Power.

Clues:

Travel north of Mason, W.Va. on Rt. 62 wile watching for mile marker signs. You will travel through Hartford, unincorporated, at mile marker 37. Just past Sliding Hill Creek Road (two entrances, actually) on your right, you'll top a small hill. Pull off to the left where the long guard railing starts. Notice Mountaineer Plant in the distand up river, a particularly nice view in the morning. You seek a camouflaged bag within the guard rail.

Please be discreet when retrieving and rehiding and make sure all containers are resealed well. Let me know of the letterbox and contents condition and how your visit to the area was by contacting the placer. There is a roadside park just ahead on the right if you have little ones with you. Bring a piece of wax paper and they'll zoom off the slide!

While you’re in the area, you might want to search for “How It’s Made – Electricity – Generator” letterbox. Happy Letterboxing!
