Location: A Sanctuary named for the state’s symbolic wildlife animal and a synonym for stream. A bit of research may be required.

Time: Approximately 30 minutes depending on season & trail conditions.

Terrain: Snowy, level trail (in other seasons, I’m guessing dirt trail).

Around the globe, the Chinese New Year celebrations will take place based on February 3rd 2011, which is the start of the Lunar New Year - the year of the Rabbit. Preparations for the New Year often begin during the last month of the lunar year. It is an auspicious occasion, and great detail is taken in its readiness. The home must be cleaned thoroughly. The past year's dirt is swept away, and clutter is straightened out. This is done so that negative aspects of the past year are not brought forward to the New Year. On New Year’s Eve, family members must return to the parent's home for a special meal together. Various foods are prepared and eaten because of their symbolic significances. The food must be abundant, and there must be some left over at the end of the meal. The New Year will therefore start with plenty. It is hoped that there then will be abundance throughout the year. Luckily for all of us, the year of the Rabbit is supposed to be a sharp contrast to the explosive year of the Tiger. It is a year of placidity and respite where little will be set in stone; a carefree happy year that will be both temperate and relaxed! May this be a happy year of letterboxing for everyone!

In Chinese Astrology there are five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal and water) and twelve animals (rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and pig) forming a complete cycle of sixty. This means there are five different types of Rabbit years: wood rabbit, fire rabbit, earth rabbit, metal rabbit and water rabbit. 2011 is a Metal Rabbit year.

People born in the Year of the Rabbit are articulate, talented, and ambitious. They are virtuous, reserved, and have excellent taste. Rabbit people are admired, trusted, and are often financially lucky. They are fond of gossip but are tactful and generally kind. Rabbit people seldom lose their temper. They are clever at business and, being conscientious, never back out of a contract. They would make good gamblers for they have the uncanny gift of choosing the right thing. However, they seldom gamble, as they are conservative and wise.

General Rabbit characteristics: Lucky with business and money. Clever, tender, sensitive, peace-loving, sometimes moody, crying easily at criticism and harsh words, refined, tactful, rather aloof, but diplomatic.

Traits for specific Rabbit years:

FIRE - Feb 2, 1927 to Jan 22, 1928 and Jan 29, 1987 to Feb 16, 1988
Traits: Emotional, unafraid, secretive, loving, unobtrusive, sensitive, perceptive and motivated by appreciation. Fire adds spark to the Rabbit’s personality and all that Fire Rabbits do. Fire compels Rabbits to seek new adventures. Prone to tantrums, Fire Rabbits prefer to avoid conflict.

WOOD – Feb 14, 1915 to Feb 2, 1916 and Feb 11, 1975 to Jan 30, 1976
Traits: Generous to the point of foolishness, thoughtful, kindly, liberal and compassionate. Wood Rabbits occupy their time doing for others; always feeling the need to make others content. This generosity is easy for others to take advantage of and sometimes Wood Rabbits don’t even realize is happening.

EARTH – Feb 19, 1939 to Feb 7, 1940 and Feb 16, 1999 to Feb 4, 2000
Traits: Serious/solemn, steadfast, materialistic, fair, withdrawn, and money-oriented. Earth Rabbits are grounded in reality. Their advice can be harsh, but honest. Home life is important to Earth Rabbits, as are money and material goods.

METAL – Feb 6, 1951 to Jan 26, 1952 and Feb 3, 2011 to Jan 22, 2012
Traits: Devious, artistic, passionate, rational, temperamental, sensitive and motivated by attention to detail. Metal gives Rabbits more strength, resilience and determination. Metal Rabbits are more intense in their actions, whether they’re work-related or romantic.

WATER - Jan 29, 1903 to Feb 15, 1904 and Jan 25, 1963 to Feb 12, 1964
Traits: Meditative, fragile, withdrawn, empathic, delicate, and motivated by peace. Like the currents, Water Rabbits prefer to go with the flow, avoiding conflict at all costs, even in situations that are bothersome. It’s easy to take advantage of Water Rabbits. They’re very supportive of others.

CLUES:

The determined rabbit hopped northwest from the cars parked at the end of the road toward the trailhead sign. She intuitively know how to get ahead in the world and, motivated by an attention to detail, she studied the sign and checked the box for a trail map. She was determined to find a good home, so resolutely started down the main trail, staying to the right. Being a rational rabbit, she obeyed the first arrow and soon passed a bench. She wasn’t interested in taking risks, so she bounded forward on the main trail, passing the letters F & G. No Frivolousness or Gambling for her! Clever and conscientious, she once again followed the directive of a sign and soon found herself leaping past three more letters of the alphabet. Now she became more sensitive to her surroundings. She had a good eye for art and design and therefore noticed an arrangement of several cut logs on the right, surrounding a sturdy upright tree. With an uncanny gift for choosing the right thing, she made 17 more hops along the trail, and then spotted an attractive spot on the left side of the trail. She liked a conservative lifestyle, where one of the most important things is security, and the stump and fallen tree seemed to offer this. She therefore headed to the back side, near the base. Rabbits are most comfortable being home, and home is also where Rabbits prefer to entertain, so please feel free to introduce yourself. Their homes are always neat and organized, so please be sure to reseal and replace everything as you found it or better.

After paying a visit, return the way you came until you reach F. Perhaps this actually stands for “Fortunate” or “Flowing”? If you’d like a view of the water, turn right here and then follow this alternate path back to your car.

In honor of the Rabbit, you may want to start/end your search with a meal at one of the nearby Chinese restaurants (15820 W National Ave or 16150 West National Avenue).

"Kung Hei Fat Choi!" (Cantonese for "Congratulations and be prosperous!")
