Spring Chicks in the Country
Owner: Pengwen
Placement date: May 9, 2010
County: Tulare
Location/city Kernville (20 mi north) 1 box, but check out Madder ‘n ‘ell too.
Hike length, about 1/2 mile or so.

Note: If you are looking for clues in the Kern River Valley check Kern County section as well as Tulare County clues. You could spend a long weekend in the Kern River Valley.

From Kernville: Follow clue sheet for Madder ‘n ‘ell. If driving from Tulare County via Ponderosa, take the road to Mc Nalley’s Restaurant located south of Johnsondale. Gas, vittles and portapotties. Park in the lot north of restaurant and walk along short dirt road down through the trailers until you see the bridge across the Kern River.

Note: The clues take you high above the Kern River on a narrow trail. Keep dogs on leash and keep the little tots controlled! To stamp in: An orange or brown color would be fine. The stamp is primitive and yellow does not show as well on a logbook.

Clues: Take the pedestrian bridge across the mighty Kern River, turn to left and walk DOWN river stamping in and then passing the Madder ‘n ‘ell box just after the nice little semi rocky beach.

Continue past the rocky beach and very soon you arrive at a gully. Look for “Tobias Creek” trail sign on your LEFT. Take trail along river; it will loop up briefly away from the river and soon you will begin gaining elevation. Look for trail sign “Whiskey Creek” and 2 other numbered trails. Take the LEFT hand trail (lower one) that leads above the river. Don’t worry if trail signs are missing, you can follow clues without them. Walk a few minutes savoring the view and look for a big house with a BLUE roof across the river. A cluster of trailers will be nearby. This is Soda Springs that you passed on main road.

Walk past the house just a bit noticing several rocky outcroppings on trail RIGHT until you can site almost dead north on your compass on the 2 large rocks on the down river side of the house’s river front walkway. On trail RIGHT there will be a rocky outcropping and on the up river side there is a small hole clearly visible that contains the box. When there in January 2011 there was a huge bush atop the cliff with a long branch extending down covering the hole and semi blocking the trail. If you can’t find the hiding spot and see a light green house on a little hill across the river you have gone too far. Go back and look for the big blue roofed house.

Please stamp in away from hiding spot and then hide and cover the box with rocks. The trail is fairly well used. Continue along trail to Tobias Creek to lengthen your hike. There are lupine meadows in the spring…Lovely! We had burgers at Mc Nalleys after our morning Mother’s Day hike with the gentle Eve and the Alten Family.
