Pop’s Cap

This letterbox is a tribute to my Dad. Born and raised in Boston, his trademark was a Red Sox baseball cap. If the Sox were winning the “B” stood for Boston, but if they weren’t, he’d tell you it stood for Bill.
I learned how to carve a stamp by watching my Dad create and carve linoleum block prints for the family Christmas card every year. It was an annual tradition that I always looked forward to and helped with. I’m still using the tools that I purchased when I left home, so I could begin my own tradition of homemade cards.
“So, my hat’s off to you, Pop!”

This letterbox is found at the small Burr Cemetery on Route 81 in Higganum, CT., 2.1 miles south of Exit 9 for Route 9. It is almost directly across from (actually a tad south of) the Burr District Elementary School. In winter, if the roads in the cemetery are not passable by car, you can park at the school and walk across.

Enter the cemetery on either driveway and go downhill to the first intersection. Turn left (south) and continue to the end of the pavement. To the right of your vehicle, in the second row, is a “Kimball” stone. Standing in front of this gravesite, turn left and walk 30 steps to the end of the row. There is a pipe in the ground at this spot. Look to your right and walk to the grave of Rip McManus. Now take a compass reading of 200 degrees and walk 20 steps into the woods, to a large 3 sister oak tree. Tucked into a hollow at the base on the SE side is the Pop’s Cap letterbox. Stamp in and rehide carefully.

As you leave to go back to your car, nod to my Pop or tip your cap, even if there’s a NYY on it- he’d be the last one to expect you to stay away. Thanks, and Happy Boxing- Sunshine
