July 23, 2005 TEMPORARILY OUT OF COMMISSION DUE TO EXTENSIVE WATER DAMAGE. WILL REPAIR AND REPLACE SOMETIME IN AUGUST.

Camping just southeast of Vancouver Lake on March 30,1805, Captain Meriwether Lewis wrote the Columbia Valley is "the only desirable situation for a settlement which we have seen west of the Rocky Mountains."

This part of the series was intented for Frenchman's Bar Park, however, we decided against placing it in a fee area. We amended the plan to a little park just down the road where you will not need to part with any Sacajawea coins.

From I-5, take 4th Plain West to Lower River Road. Follow River Road approximately .5 miles past Vancouver Lake and look for a parking lot to the left. It is right before a sharp right hand turn and mile marker 6.

To the letterbox

Follow the path to the overlook of the river. Imagine what it was like while the Corps camped near there almost 200 years ago. From the overlook, find the nearest telephone pole. At 308 magnetic you will find the pole has an ancient relative. The box is 7 steps away from the old pole at 295 degrees. It is in a multi trunked and very thorny tree covered by a rock.
