The Gift of Christmas
The Mowry conservation Area features a lively trout stream, towering hemlocks and pines, a walking trail, and the remains of an earthen stone dam. There are some hills and there are rocks and roots on the trail so please be careful. It may be slippery when wet. These boxes are planted on a loop trail, which is about ½ mile long. There is no ink in the boxes. We recommend red, orange, yellow, green, blue and brown. There are two other boxes in this area as well, The Griffin and Puzzled.

Directions; Take Route 295 to exit 15B (old exit 8B) onto Route 7. Follow Route 7 to Route 104 South, and follow that to Old Forge Road. Just two tenths of a mile on Old Forge Rd. on the right is the Mowry Conservation area. There is ample parking on the opposite side of the road.

Clues: The story: The angel Gabriel said to Mary, “Do not be afraid Mary, you have found favor with God. You will be with child and have a son, and you are to name him Jesus.
To find the angel enter the area and cross the bridge. As you reach the far side of the bridge look straight ahead up the hill for a tree with a five-foot cavity and is now an 8 ft. snag. Go to this tree and look left for a rock with a small stump beside it. Look between the rock and the stump.

The angel said to the shepherds, “this will be a sign to you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.
Take the red blazed trail up the hill. Part way up is a rock with a red blaze. As the trail turns to the right there is a two sister pine-one of the sisters is deceased. Look to the left and you will see another large two sister pine with both sisters lying down. Under the sister that is pointing to the trail is a ledge. The angel is under the ledge under bark.

A great star appeared in the East.
Continue on the trail until you see a bare tree hung up in the “V” of a twin pine. Cross the downed tree in the trail and continue on the trail for twenty steps. Look to the right for a moss covered ledge with a small tree on top. Under the ledge under bark is the star.

Magi from the East came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the East and have come to worship him.”
Continue on until the junction of red and yellow. Go straight on yellow and cross the stonewall. Turn left and walk to the base of a three sister tree. The wise man is hiding in the fallen limb.

Christmas traditions of today in the USA. God showed his love for us by sending his Son. Today we show our love to others by exchanging gifts which we place under a tree.
For your tree return to the red trail and turn right. Very soon you will see a tree on the right with an orange blaze, and a tree on the left with two red blazes. Look left of red blazes and follow the line of trees to the top of a small hill. In a cave under the largest pine tree is your tree.

{{RETIRED I couldn't find when checking 5/6/18. Let me know if you do.}}

Who doesn’t enjoy the taste of candy canes?
Continue on the trail, at the bottom of the hill look on the right for an uprooted tree. Where the tree meets a rock the candy cane is hidden under bark.

Stockings are hung on Christmas Eve with the hope they will be filled with all kinds of goodies.
Continue on the trail. It will wind left and go up hill. When you come to an area with uprooted trees on both sides and some small rocks on the left, look on the right 11 paces into the woods for a knee high rock, box with the stocking is at the end of it.

All children hope that Santa will visit with his enormous bag of gifts.
Start downhill and see on your right an uprooted tree that has been cut. Directly behind it and perpendicular to the trail several steps into the woods is a downed tree with no bark. Where the break is is the box with log book. PLEASE REHIDE VERY WELL.

After stamping in, continue down the hill to the bridge.

We hope you have enjoyed this series and we leave you with this thought; “Wise men still seek Him.”
