All is well with the Down by the Bay box! It was checked on 5/13/04 and is intact. Thank you to all of our visitors thus far!
If you're in the mood for beautiful water views, a peaceful walk through the forest, and the chance to see bay-area wildlife, this is the letterbox for you! If you have a canine friend, bring him or her along for a visit to the dog beach.
This box is placed within Downs Park, which can be reached via Mountain Road in Pasadena, MD. Enter the park on the right, passing through the gatehouse to pay your $5 entrance fee (an annual pass is also available for purchase which will grant you access to all Anne Arundel County fee-accessible parks). Continue on the main road until you reach the bayfront/playground parking lot. You can park here to begin your quest.
Facing the Chesapeake Bay, follow the blacktop path toward the water. The ampitheater will be on your left and the visitor's center on your right. The path curves around toward the bayfront. Pass the small landing near the water and continue on the Perimeter Trail, passing behind the theater. You will reach several forks in the path. At each, bear right. Notice the wooded area devestated by Hurricane Isabel in 2003. A new sign details the hurricane's impact on the park. As you continue on, take a few moments to relish the view from the North Overlook. A wooden landscape feature doubles as a fantastic place to rest and enjoy the Bay. Ocean-going vessals can often be seen here as they journey away from the ports of Baltimore.
From the North Overlook, continue on the Perimeter Path. The path will curve left back into the forest. Pass the stairs leading to the dog beach on your right and continue on the path. You will see a wooden footbridge leading from the path on your right. Pause at the juncture of this wooden path to count two posts on the right side, including the opening support. Reach underneath into the narrow crevice and you will find what you seek. Leave your stamp, but also, if you desire, date your entry and leave us a note detailing the creatures that you see on the pond when you visit. Turtles, wood ducks, mallards, and Canada Geese are just a few of the wild creatures who live here.
This can be a relativly popular park on sunny days, so please do take care to remove and replace the box discreetly.
