Location: Swanzey, NH - East of N.H. Route 32 on Carlton Road, one-half mile south of Swanzey Village spanning the South Branch Ashuelot River.
Style of Bridge: Queenpost
Year of Construction: Approximately 1789 - It was completely reconstructed in 1996.
Original Cost: 15 pounds

Historical Remarks: Town records indicate the original bridge at this site was constructed in 1789, however, the exact date has not been verified. The bridge was rebuilt in 1869, and again in 1996. According to local tradition, the bridge was built by local barn builders since the truss construction of the bridge is similar to that used in barns. When it was built, a wagon fully loaded with hay was used as a standard for the height and width of the opening. The Carlton Bridge is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Carlton Covered Bridge is a lovely covered bridge which was in view of local rural character and beloved oxen Buck's grazing summer field while on hiatus from his acting career. Buck was part of a team of oxen used in "The Old Homestead" play written by local Swanzey denizen Denman Thompson. Sadly, his service came to an end and he is now memorialized with this letterbox.
You may be able to see 'Ike' his acting partner in the field from the spot of the letterbox along with 'Star and Bright' who now sub in for Ike in this longest outdoor running play.
Buck and Ike have been the center of many local artists paintings and are a beloved part of Swanzey history.

CLUES to the BOX...
Park on the East side of the bridge in the small parking area. Cross the road and pause at the white railing and peer south west to see the field across the river. You might find Ike, Star, or Bright grazing happily in the sun if the season is right.
Follow the small path down to the river and under the bridge...follow the rock wall/foundation back towards the white railing. Inside the rock wall...3rd row down...you shall find our letterbox!
Please stamp in...replacing the box and rock covering it.
