Leiper-Smedly Trail is off Avondale Rd in Wallingford – park in the gravel lot for the trail. This is a 2 1/2 mile round trip hilly walk. The trail parallels 476 north bound so it is not quiet. It is paved and bike and stroller friendly, but because of the hills it may not be the best for young families.

The summer of 2010 Silly Bandz mania hit our family hard. (For those who don’t know Silly Bandz are shaped rubber bands that kids love to trade) Star Wars had been bit particularly hard by the Silly Bandz bug. Unfortunately, his favorite bandz is lost!

Begin your search in the Leiper-Smedly Trail parking lot. Retrace Star Wars’ steps to find the missing bandz.

Where were we? Oh I know…we started by going over the bridge that’s under the overpass.

Originally this area was settled by the Dutch, so practice your Dutch by clopping over “brug twee”.

Watch out for bikers – they should yield to pedestrians and so should you. There is only one way to go, so pass through the concrete walls.

Why is this stone balcony here? Believe it or not construction of 476 (or the “Blue Route” as locals call it) was not started until 1967. Several houses had to be torn down to build the road. Where you are standing there used to be a large house. Be careful if you look down - My Silly Bandz isn’t there.

Keep going and find Donna to thank her for the beautiful path we are on. Once you’ve sat and caught your breath keep going because we still need to find my Bandz.
Oh I remember… I ducked under the train. Then went 25 paces and jumped over the large black dot. We’re getting close!

My Bandz was on when I went up the hill and found the path marked by 2 white rocks almost across from each other. I walked towards the broken tree and rusty drum. Then I turned around while still on the path. That tree at 160 looks familiar. There it is! My favorite bandz is behind the tree hidden in rocks, twigs and leaves. Aw! It’s broken – Box contains stamp, pad, and book. Also there are instructions on how to turn a Silly Bandz into a trail stamp. Rehide well!

To get back retrace your steps or explore further down the Leiper-Smedly Trail by following the arrows. (The Leiper-Smedly Trail eventually ends at Smedly Park, but it is a really long walk from where you are)
