Adopted by zess the treehuggers in December 2010. This was the very first letterbox our family ever found!! That was in 2006, and this box appears not to have been maintained since then. The logbook was seriously water damaged (although I could find our sign-in!), and the stamp was cracked almost completely in half. I re-carved the stamp, as accurate to the original as possible, put in a new logbook, and planted another box along the path in celebration ("The First Treehugger"). I have not changed any clues; all that follows is as 98 left it.

An easy stroll through the woods will find you the FLYING HIPPO letterbox at the Walk-up and Robinson Memorial Reservation, Westborough, Mass. Mostly flat, easy paths, 20 minutes round trip.

* 07/01/2005 - Revised directions - previous directions were a bit misleading. Confirmed letterbox in tact, replaced book that was full.

Directions -
From Route 9 westbound, take the exit for Computer Drive. Turn left at the light onto Computer Drive and get in the right lane and follow that road as it crosses over Route 9. At the next traffic light, go straight for about 1/2 mile. Turn left at “Westborough Park” sign on Friberg Parkway. Take Friberg Parkway 1/4 mile to the Walkup Reservation driveway entrance on the right, marked by an SVT sign. Turn right and then bear left to the parking area.

Walk to granite steps by the park kiosk.
Head east on walking trail.
Take a right on cross trail, just before the stone bridge.
Take a right at the bottom of the second steps.
Stay to the right at the meadow fork
Take a right onto the trail to Upland Knoll (blue blazed).
As you near the top of the hill, the trail starts to dip before rising again to the top.
As it starts to dip, look for an old stone wall on your left. There is a big tree in the midst of the rock wall.
Rocks are embedded in the roots of this tree. The FLYING HIPPO is hidden beneath the stones.

After you stamp in, continue on the blue trail back down through a lovely pine and hemlock forest. At the bottom, go left and you will be back at the parking lot.

Hope you enjoy.

FLYING HIPPO explanation - This box was placed by a corporate team working on a HIPAA project. We had frequent project team meetings in Westborough and enjoyed lunchtime walks. Our team mascott was the FLYING HIPPO.

While you are visiting this reservation, check out another letterbox - titled "Walkup Reservation".

The Walkup Reservation is owned and managed by Sudbury Valley Trustees. For more about Walkup and other properties and membership, please be sure to visit www.svtweb.org.
