The rugged San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado make great eye candy. This is a place where you can experience the beauty and peace of the outdoors. One place to enjoy this experience is Williams Creek Lake, northwest of Pagosa Springs, nestled up on the south side of the San Juans.
Williams Creek Lake area is car and tent-friendly. The towering mountains of the Weminuche Wilderness provide a picturesque backdrop to Teal, a Williams Creek Lake campground. With no boat ramp but camping sites a short walk from the Lake under mature Ponderosa pines and featuring Kokanee salmon and trout, Williams Creek Lake is an excellent location to enjoy the beauty of the San Juan National Forest. South of the Lake, along Williams Creek, is the Williams Creek campground. This campground is one of the largest and most compressed in the Forest, offering both shaded and sunny sites. Williams Creek campground is a very popular destination for its quiet and peaceful atmosphere, not fishing, during the summer months.

PLANTED ON 10-10-10: Aspen is near Willams Creek Lake. From Pagosa Springs, Colorado, go 2.5 miles west on Hwy 160. Turn right (northwest) onto county road 600. After 6 miles the pavement ends and cr 600 becomes gravel forest road 631. Follow the signs to the lake. Enjoy the beauty of the drive, it is a good 20 + miles to the lake. Once you get to the lake go towards “TEAL” campground. Stop directly outside the log/post fence, cattle guard, entrance. Walk up to the post on the left side of the entrance, (facing the lake) and once you get to it turn 180 degrees so your back is to the lake. With your back to the lake you should see a large rock surrounded by small aspen trees, wild rose bushes, and other pokey plants. The box “Aspen” is at the base of this large rock, on the inside of all the bushes and trees, so you will have to find your way into the shrubs. The box is covered with a small S.P.O.R. Good luck…enjoy the views…take some pictures…and do a good job at REHIDATION. This camping sight is known to be 90% full, daily during the summer months.
