Letterbox Name: The Eagle
Location: Vernon Hills, IL
Distance: Approximately 1.0 mile (round-trip)

In December 2010, our son Jim earned his Eagle Scout rank. On July 1, 2010, Jim completed work on his Eagle project. For those who may not know, the Eagle project is something that a Scout researches, proposes, and plans himself. Then he works to lead others in executing the project. Any required materials need to be donated or borrowed, and the Scout essentially becomes a project manager, ensuring that the project is successfully completed. For Jim, it’s been an opportunity to learn about communication, people management, sales, presentation skills, ecology, conservation, cooking, and a dash of carpentry. It’s been a long, successful road, and he’s done an outstanding job.

So what better way to mark this significant step than with a letterbox?

********************************************************************************

From ancient times, the eagle has been a symbol of power, independence, and strength. In Greek mythology, the eagle is a symbol of Zeus. It is the symbol of American independence, and appears on the Mexican flag, part of a rich legend and a colorful history. It is a powerful bird, with the incredible ability to spot a mouse from above – a mile away. And I could go on.

And so, it seemed fitting to break from my usual imagery, and carve an image of this stately creature.

So to find The Eagle, begin at Wright Woods, in Vernon Hills. Jim’s project was to place four boot bush stands with educational signs, aimed at preventing the spread of garlic mustard and other invasive plant species. When you park at Wright Woods (near the intersection of St. Mary’s Road and Everett Road), you’ll see the first of these signs. Take a look, and move on to take the red trail westward, through the woods. When you reach an intersection (with the pink trail), take the pink trail to the left continuing to walk with the lake on your left. Eventually, you’ll reach another intersection, this time with the white trail.

Turn right onto the white trail, heading westward. After a short while, you’ll come to a 5-foot tall stump on the left side of the trail. From this spot, take a compass bearing of 202 degrees. Walk 63 steps to a tree that’s missing its top. From that tree, take a bearing of 244 degrees and walk 10 steps. This will bring you to a tree that’s been struck by lightning. (Great Zeus!) Check the bottom of this tree. The Eagle rests within.

Please stamp in, re-hide well, and drop us a note!
