THIS LETTERBOX IS RETIRED...

Welcome to the Locks!

Construction of the Lake Washington Ship Canal and Hiram M. Chittenden Locks was completed in 1917 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Connecting the waters of Lake Washington, Lake Union, and Salmon Bay to the tidal waters of Puget Sound, the Canal and Locks have allowed recreational and commercial vessels to travel to the docks and warehouses of Seattle's busy fresh water harbor.

The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks are always a great attraction. Every trip to the Locks should include a walk in the garden, watching the boats, visiting the fish ladder, and exploring the exhibits and bookstore in the Visitor Center!

The grounds are open daily between the hours of 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Directions to the Locks:

From North of Seattle:
Take Interstate 5 southbound and get off the highway at Exit 172.
Follow the ramp onto N 85 {1st right} to 24th Avenue NW. Turn left on 24th Avenue NW and follow the road to Market Street NW.
Turn right on Market Street NW, go westbound until the road Y's (there is a Taco Time restaurant in the Y).
Follow the road to the left (the road turns into NW 54th Street).
The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks are approximately 100 yards on the left after passing the Y in the road.

From South of Seattle:
Take Interstate 5 northbound, get off at Exit 169.
At the end of the ramp, turn left onto NE 45th Street (westbound) and carefully follow the arterial, and the signs, to the Locks.
The arterial will turn into NW 46th Street, then into Market Street NW. Once you are on Market Street NW, go westbound until the road Y's (there is a Taco Time restaurant in the Y).
Follow the road to the left (the road turns into NW 54th Street).
The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks are approximately 100 yards on the left after passing the Y in the road.

Directions to the Letterbox:
After parking, enter through the main entrance. Walk straight down the main path to the Locks. Take some time to watch the boats going through the Locks to and from Lake Union. This is the best part of the visit! After watching the boats, head across the locks to the fish ladder. This is one of the places where salmon head in from the sea to their spawning areas upstream. It is interesting to learn about their trek and to see some pretty big fish! Above where the fish climb you will see Seven Shining Waves. Walk East from the waves to the "Shipbuilder's" anchor. With your back to the 'anchor' take five steps parallel with the cement bench. Have a seat and carefully reach into the foliage behind you. The letterbox is hiding under plants and leaves.
Please be discreet when searching, and re-hide the box well by covering with leaves, etc.

A lovely little ten-year-old girl put this box together. She also carved the stamp herself. This is her first letterbox, and she hopes everyone will enjoy it!

Directions and information about the Ballard Locks were taken from their official website. For more detailed information, visit them at www.nws.usace.army.mil/opdiv/lwsc/

Special thanks to the "Ranger"!!
