TEMPUS FUGIT #3 (Cutler's Farm and Elm Street Cemetery, est.1804)(Top replaced and relocated 8.06.11)

www.monroehistoricsociety.org/buryinggrounds

Follow Rt 111N, passing McDonald's on your right and Bill's Drive-in on your left. At the next traffic light (Elm Street), take a left. At the first stop sign, take a left. Look for the cemetery on your left, and park.

This letterbox has two stamps, each concealed in different locations in the cemetery. The first stamp is contained in a small black plastic pouch and is the TOP of the tombstone. It is a winged hourglass, representing the "tempus fugit" (time flies) image carved into many colonial gravestones. When you have found the TOP, STAMP IN. The second stamp which is the TEXT of the tombstone is contained in a box along with a pad. No ink has been provided, so bring your own.

TOP:(replaced 8.06.11) Walking through the main gate, turn left and follow the metal fence, looking for the row of BEARDSLEY tombstones. The row begins with the white marble stone dedicated to "Hattie L." At the other end of the row is the stone dedicated to Dr. Beardsley's wife. Carefully search around the roots of the yucca plant growing near her stone. Be careful. The plant is prickly, and if you get stuck Mrs. Beardsley will have to call for her husband.(PLEASE DON'T STEAL IT!)

TEXT:(repaired 5.28.11) Walk back toward the main gate, heading toward the large SHERWOOD Monument with the cross on the top. Facing this monument, look ahead and to the left to see a lone and ghostly white pine tree. Underneath the pine is an angel statue dedicated to the deceased HUNTLEY son. Facing the angel, look over the rock wall to your left to see a tall thin oak tree with sawed off pieces of log at its feet. The TOMBSTONE TEXT BOX is hidden under these logs.

Stamp in PLEASE replace the box, carefully.
