TEMPUS FUGIT #1 (East Village Cemetery, est. 1766)

www.monroehistoricsociety.org/buryinggrounds

Follow Rt 111N in Monroe, past Masuk High School on your right. Be looking for a green "Webb Mt. Discovery Zone" sign on your right. This is East Village Road. Turn right onto East Village. Proceed until you come to the center of the old village at the intersection with Barn Hill Road at the old Meeting House. Through the stop sign and you will see East Village Cemetery on your right.

This letterbox has two stamps, each concealed in different locations in the cemetery. The first stamp is contained in a small black plastic pouch and is the TOP of the tombstone. It is a winged hourglass, representing the "tempus fugit" (time flies)image carved into many colonial gravestones. When you have found the Top, STAMP IN. The second stamp which is the TEXT of the tombstone is contained in a box along with a pad. No ink is provided, so bring your own.

TOP: Enter the right gate of the cemetery. Walk up the road until you come to the JOHNSON obelisk on your left. You will notice a flag and/or a metal G.A.R. War Memorial at its base. The TOP stamp is behind the metal memorial under a small stone.(PLEASE DON'T STEAL IT!)

TEXT: With the monument to your back, look over the white fence into the woods. See the solitary and ghostly white birch tree? Hop over the fence at this point, and turn back toward the Johnson monument. Look at the base of the stone wall. There is a flat, squared-off stone sticking out from the wall. This stone covers the TOMBSTONE TEXT.

Stamp in. PLEASE replace the box carefully.
