Difficulty: Moderate
Distance to Letterbox: Close to 4 miles RT.
The "Mining Ghost" letterbox is located in the Snowmass area, on the hike to Crater lake at the Maroon Bells. Great hike!!! If get there early you can park at trailhead, but in summer after 9am must take shuttle bus.
Directions:
from Glenwood Springs, take Hwy. 82 south towards Aspen. (It takes just over one hour to reach the Maroon Bells from Glenwood Springs.) As you approach Aspen, you will see the Aspen airport on your right. Keep following the road and cross the bridge over Maroon Creek. Just beyond Maroon Creek, you’ll reach a roundabout. Enter it carefully and follow the sign for Maroon Creek road. If you see the church tower, you’ll know you’re going the right direction. From here, just keep following the road until you reach the pay station. After that, just follow the road until it ends at the parking lot.
To the Letterbox:
Walk along the lakeshore on trail heading toward the mountains. Near end of lake, take the trail going up to Crater lake. Continue on this trail until you reach Crater lake. Continue on trail along shore and past the lake. Just before entering the trees is a wooden sign for campsite 6. Go right on small trail until another wooden sign to "6". Just behind this sign is a large and small evergreen tree. Go around the small one to back side of large one. Box is at base of the large tree, under a large flat rock.
