As of December 6, 2014, This box is still in place.

When I was much younger, there were several dairies in our town, but only one, Randolph Dairy, had an ice cream counter. I don’t remember how many different flavors were offered, but they were all delicious. It closed around 1960 after about 40 years of service. Since then there have been at least two others parlors that have come and gone. Now there is none.

My current favorite is Central Dairy located at 618 Madison in Jefferson City. The first Central Dairy was opened in Columbia, MO in 1920 by Dot Sappington. In the 1930's he sold the business to his son and in 1932 he opened a branch on Dunklin Street in Jefferson City. In the beginning the dairy products were brought from Columbia, but the elder Sappintgon built a new dairy at the present location and added the ice cream counter in front. With many flavors to choose from, it is a very popular place. I don’t get there as often as I would like, but it is “a must visit” destination when we’re in the area.

Because of heavy traffic at the dairy’s location, this box is planted several blocks away in Washington Park. Begin at the tennis courts at the corner of Michigan and Louisiana. Park in the lot and take the Greenway Trail just south of the lot. Head west on the trail. Go around the curve at the west end of the courts. From the end of the rail on your left, take ABOUT 32 paces ahead on the trail and look uphill to the east for a large tree near the fence with a cluster of young mulberry at the base in front. Look in the middle of the cluster for a hole near the top which holds your prize. You may notice the animal den which is also at the base of the large tree but on the northerly side. That is NOT the hole you want. This can be a pretty busy place, so please use stealth and find a spot somewhere else along the trail to do your logging.

When this box was planted there were many harmless vines hanging down from the trees, which helped cover the hiding place. Make sure they are still in place after you hide the box. If you are there when the vines have died back, please make sure the box is covered with leaves and/or some other natural cover so that it is not easily spotted if someone should happen up that way. Thanks!

Now, you definitely must go to Central Dairy and reward yourself with the treat of your choice!
(Hours: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM on Monday through Saturday; 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM on Sunday.)

Please let me know if the box is in need of maintenance or if by some chance the logbook is full. Thank you very much. Good luck with all your searches.
