Who painted the portrait of George Washington on the dollar bill? Gilbert Stuart did. His birthplace is a delightful homestead housing a snuff mill as well as a 250 year-old gristmill. You can walk the grounds and the nature trail to the L.B. for free (donation requested) but we took the tour and enjoyed it very much. The water wheels are running and both of the mills are operational so if you like early 18th century hydro-power and Americana then definitely take the tour.

There are trail maps available in the museum office. The trails are clear and well marked but the terrain is slightly challenging with a steep rise or two and many roots across sections of the path. The walk can be as short as 20 minutes round-trip. After you stamp-in take a moment to wander up to a lovely overlook with a bench and a view of the pond that feeds the mills. You can return by a number of routes including the longer Outer Loop Trail. There is another historic cemetery that was re-discovered 2 years ago on the Inner Trail (green) just past the Tri-Trail Junction.

Directions:
From the North - Take I -95 South through Providence to exit 9, Route 4 South. Route 4 South merges with Route 1 South. Take the exit for Route 138 East toward Jamestown and Newport. Take the first exit to Route 1A South toward Narragansett. Take your third right onto Snuff Mill Road and follow signs to the Museum.

From the South - Take I-95 North to exit 3 Route 138 East. Follow Route 138 East past URI to Route 1. At the traffic light, turn left onto Route 1 North. Proceed about two miles and turn right onto Gilbert Stuart Road .

From the East - From Newport follow Route 138 West over the Newport Bridge to Jamestown and continue over the Jamestown Bridge. Take the first exit over the bridge to Route 1A South toward Narragansett. Take your third right onto Snuff Mill Road and follow signs to the Museum.
Parking is in the lot across from the museum.

You need to go when the museum is open as follows:
Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday 11:00 A.M.– 4:00 P.M. Sunday open at 12:00.
* Please check Calendar on the website for special events that could affect daily operations. www.gilbertstuartmuseum.org

Clue:
Start at the Nature Trail at the rear of the picnic area. Follow the trail past Rhode Island Historic Cemetery number 108. Stay on the Outer Loop Trail. You will see a marker just past the cemetery. Just before the intersection of the Connector Trail (red) and the Outer Loop Trail (yellow) you will pass through a stone wall. Turn left onto the Connector Trail and begin counting the large stones that make up the wall. Look behind the wall between the ninth and tenth stones. Open the rock “door” to find the key. Please close the door carefully when you leave. This is our first letterbox. We hope you enjoy it.
