On the way from Fort Bragg to Westport on Hwy 1 off the road a bit is Yet Another Western Snowy Plover Letterbox.

Here’s a pretty good website about this endangered bird:

http://www.westernsnowyplover.org/

Also, there’s a beach just north of Fort Bragg which is one of the Snowy Plover’s nesting areas.

Around Hwy. 1 mile marker 74 is a Vista Point on the western side of the road. Really it’s a bit more than a Vista Point with several benches, plenty of parking and several informational signs. Turn into the parking area and find a spot. Then head down the path toward the ocean. There are a couple paths and this one is just south of the area with three benches and three informational signs. Walk down this paved path about 239 steps. This distance is a rough estimate and I’m 5’ 5”. Anyhow, at this juncture I hope you’re in the vicinity of a dirt path on your right. Walk down this informal path to a Monterey Pine which in September, 2010 was maybe 7’ high. Under this tree snugged in next to the base on the NE side I hope you will find the Western Snowy Plover Letterbox.

Please close bags and boxes carefully against moisture and make sure all the little plastic from the bags is entirely inside the box. And thanks for coming!
