Carnifax Ferry State Park
Summersville, WV
Park in the main lot near playground. Walk away from the playground and read sign about Carnifax Ferry; proceed left from the sign to the trail head. Follow the Patterson trail to Copperhead Overlook. Stop at Pillow Head Overlook and enjoy the view of the river. Facing the fence, take a compass reading of 250 degrees. You will see a large oak tree behind a hemlock (evergreen) just off of the trail. The letterbox is hidden behind the tree at it’s base. Please replace it carefully.
Continue approximately 150 yards down the trail to the Copperhead Overlook. Go down the stairs and enjoy a different view of the river. Turn around and go back up 55 stairs. Take the trail to the right about 55 paces. You will see another very large Oak tree straight ahead of you on the trail. From the large oak tree take another compass reading of 250 degrees. Follow that heading slightly up a hill to yet another oak tree. Behind this oak tree you will find a large piece of a dead log. The letter box is hidden under that log. Remember to carefully place the box back so as not to be seen inadvertently.
