Red Hill Firetower

The panoramic view of Winnipesaukee and Squam Lake from the summit of Red Hill is well worth the 1.7 mile hike up(medium difficulty, 3 hrs round trip with kids aged 6 and up). There are picnic tables at the top so don't forget to pack a lunch along with your compass. Sometimes you'll even find a fire ranger in the tower who'll show you how they track forest fires in the region.

Directions:
From the traffic lights in Center Harbor (Rt 25), take a left onto Bean Road. At 1.5 miles turn right onto Sibley Road (Red Hill Forest Fire Lookout sign is at the turn.) Travel 1.2 miles to the trailhead; parking is available at the roadside. Trail maps are at the information kiosk.

Follow the signs that point to the tower. You will pass a second information kiosk at .5 mi, stay on Red Hill trail (to the left). At the summit stand under the firetower and sight 70 degrees. Walk 22 steps in that direction and look for a geodetic survey marker imbedded in the rock. Stand on the marker and sight 100 degrees. Walk 18 steps and look for another geodetic survey marker imbedded in the rock. Stand on the second marker and sight 110 degrees. Walk 20 steps to the top edge of a large rock. The Red Hill Firetower letterbox is hidden at the base of the rock.

The Eagle Cliff letterbox can also be reached from here via the Eagle Cliff trail at the top of Red Hill (1.9 mi).
