Letterbox Name: BtVS Cemetery Series: William the Bloody…
Location: Long Grove, IL
Distance: Approximately 1 mile

Back in 2007, our very first letterboxing find was the Buffy Box, created by Dragon. And the choice of that box as our first find was no mistake. Since early in the show’s run, Lock and Shock were hooked, and it didn’t take too long for Barrel to join us. So this series was probably every bit as destined as the Slayer herself.

Each entry in the series is actually a pair of boxes – sometimes in the same cemetery, sometimes in two cemeteries relatively near to one another. And to find the names of the cemeteries that you’ll visit, you need to answer a few questions about Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The answers to these questions form a code but (good news!) the same code works for all 12 boxes. So once you’ve answered them once, you can use the same code for the subsequent entries in the series.

As for the cemeteries themselves, we tried to find unique places. They are typically the cemeteries that you might spend literally years driving right past without noticing, or without even realizing that they’re there. But they all have a bit of character. We hope you enjoy them as much as we did.

The second pair of boxes belong to Spike and his sire, Drusilla. The specific clues follow the questions.

1. What is the name of the slayer who was “activated” after Buffy died at the end of Season 1?

___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___

___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___
10, 24, 21, 22, 25, 8, 9, 10

3. What were the creepy evil beings from the critically acclaimed episode “Hush” called?

___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___
23, 21, 4, 10, 2, 21, 3, 21, 4

4. What writer and director created “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”?

___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___
26, 5, 9, 9, 13, 24, 21, 20, 5, 4

5. What does Buffy slay (primarily)?

___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___
12, 17, 3, 6, 25, 8, 21, 9

All right, so now for the clues:

Box 1 – Spike

Cemetery: 23-8-25-20-2-21-15

This is, perhaps, the strangest of the cemeteries in this series. I literally drive within 20 feet of this cemetery every day for almost 9 years, and didn’t know it was there. It’s on Route 83 in Long Grove, just north of Gilmer Road. To get to the cemetery, pull into the driveway for the Wiedner Farm, and pull off to the left side of the road. The cemetery is maintained by the Long Grove Historical Society, and they’ve been given permission for the public to use the drive when visiting.

When you arrive, you’ll likely be parked right in front of a large metal warehouse (on your left). Walk around the left side of the building, and take a compass bearing of 150 degrees. Soon, you’ll see the iron fence around the old pioneer cemetery.

Walk to the southwest corner of the plot. On your right will be a fallen tree, and the Spike box is inside.

But do take a moment to take in the stillness of the place. The traffic noise notwithstanding, it feels so still, so isolated. And when you’re ready, head back to your car to go after…

Box 2 – Drusilla

Cemetery: 20-25-17-3-5-4-20-2-17-1-21

Just a short drive away from her beloved William, Drusilla can be round, resting fitfully at the base of a large tree.

When you arrive, walk over to the dated archway at the front of the cemetery. Take a compass bearing of 160 degrees, and walk 37 steps. From the gravestone of Rufus Pelton, take a new bearing of 200 degrees, and walk 22 steps. When you reach the Ray family plot, take a final bearing of 220 degrees, and walk nineteen steps to the tree where Drusilla awaits.
