From I90 take 45 south. Make a left on Route 307 heading east. Continue through the light on the intersection of Route 46 and 307. Make a right at the first stop sign onto market street. The new section of Oakdale Cemetery will be on your left. You will pass a second entrance to Oakdale, but you should continue driving until you can make the first left onto E.Ashtabula Street. Make the left and park on the left hand side in the parking area.
As you walk through the cemetery, take note of the Bunnell/Custin monument five rows in from Market Street. It is blue and made of cast iron which is rather unusual. You will see several other cast iron head stones on your walk. Take your time to browse this section of the cemetery with its life size statues and revolutionary war grave sites.
From the parking area walk north until you come to the gravel driveway. Make a right and continue walking east. On your right look for the tree hugging the headstone of John Udell, a veteran of the War of 1770. Continue walking on the drive until you reach the Arlie monument on your right. Turn right and you will see a huge tree in front of you. The letter box is hidden in a nook at the base of the tree. Please replace the stones carefully after you have done your stamping.
Before you leave, investigate some of the other gravestones and notice the beautiful old trees. One stumps has over 150 rings. We have tried to research the cemetary but could not find any information. If you know anything about this cemetery please email me.
