Completed in 1979, Smokey Bear Historical Park was established to honor Capitan's favorite son Smokey, the little bear cub that was found with burned paws after a 17,000 acre forest fire in 1950 on the Capitan Mountains near Capitan, New Mexico. After living in the National Zoo in Washington D.C. for 26 years, Smokey passed away and was returned to the Village of Capitan to be buried at what is now the Smokey Bear Historical Park.
DIRECTIONS: Take Hwy 380/Smokey Bear Blvd. to Smokey Bear Historical Park in the center of town at 118 W. Smokey Bear Blvd.
CLUES: Find the “famous” grave, and then go on to the area “that would be near water.” Locate the “knock out punch of the old man” tree along the rock wall. On the east side there is a branch pointing east. Directly below this branch, you will find Smokey Bear, in a small black pouch.
Smokey says “Remember, only you can prevent wildfires.”
BE SURE TO ZIP POUCH AND ALL BAGS CLOSED. Please be discreet and rehide well.
