Tucker’s Tribute

Preston Tucker was born in 1903 near Capac, MI, but grew up in Lincoln Park, MI. Before creating the Tucker Torpedo, he was a Lincoln Park police officer, worked on the Ford Motor Company assembly line, sold Studebakers, Stutz’s, Chryslers, Pierce-Arrows and Dodges. Tucker invented the “Tucker Turret,” a power operated gun turret used on PT boats, landing craft, and B-17 and B-29 bombers. In 1946, Tucker’s first design for his ‘car of tomorrow’ appeared in Science Illustrated magazine. He started producing the Tucker ’48, also known as the Tucker Torpedo, but the SEC began an investigation into his company. Even though the Tucker Corporation was cleared of any regulatory wrongdoing, Preston Tucker was not able to overcome the bad publicity and production delays and the company folded. Only fifty of the Tucker ‘48s were produced. Preston Tucker died in 1956 from lung cancer when he was only 53 years old.

Tucker’s Tribute is placed at Michigan Memorial Cemetery in Flat Rock, MI, where Preston Tucker is buried. Find the George Washington statue in the Masonic Garden. Once there, you’ll find that 3 o’clock is a good time to find Preston. The last two digits of the fourth number on the headstone are important…remember them or write them down. Next, find the lighthouse near the river. From the large stone next to the parking area, take 15-16 paces in the direction in degrees that you got from the headstone earlier. At the base of a majestic oak is what you seek. Please rehide well!
