Trail Turtle’s Travels

The Sports of Lincoln Woods Series

Length:
From First Box to Last Box it’s about 3.5 miles

Difficulty:
Easy; Paved drive with wooded uneven ground, large rock-out crops and Olney Pond.
Great for children and Dogs, but some of the letterboxes are not wheelchair or stroller friendly. The area is busy so replace with care.

Directions:
You can reach Lincoln Woods either by taking the Twin River Road exit off of Route 146 or from Great Road.

Site Information:
Started in 1908 with the purchase of 70 acres, this 627 acres park is one of Blackstone Valley's great treasures. A short ride from Providence, Pawtucket, and Cumberland, it is a popular get away for northeastern Rhode Islanders. Visitors can enjoy swimming at the fresh water beach, trout fishing, playing ball, hiking, jogging, horseback riding, bouldering, cycling or just relaxing under a shade tree.
For more information about Lincoln Woods visit their web site at http://www.riparks.com/lincoln.htm

Clues:

The Paddler:
Travel to an area that people launch their vehicles. From here follow the evening sun to a path that takes you over a land bridge. Up and over a small hill summit you will trek, till you find two conc. foundations on your right. Standing on a doormat, go 202° till the land runs out. Now head 344° for about 100’ to a large fissure. Looking for bait to help your next sportsman, you will find the Paddler.

The Fisherman:
Continue your journey to a manmade land bridge that holds back the Olney. Here you find many people pursuing their favorite sport. As the clouds roll in, you look for the fisherman to give him his bait. From the northern end of the structure, journey along the paved road 300’ to a path heading into the woods at 226° to a fork; take the path that follows the bearing of 332° for 90’ on your right you will find a large monolithic stone. Taking a bearing from the rock head 332° to a small cave like structure that the fisherman has taken shelter from the storm.

The Biker:
You are told a biker could use your help. Find the sign that points the way, 25 – 26 is your goal. From the sign head 36° for about 200’ and you should find the remains of a old stone wall. From the most northerly end head south 9’. Here you will find the biker in a small cave covered by one rock.

The Climber:
You’ve heard a tale about John & Denise that met their fate on the dead-end lane. Travel through an “S” curve and look to your right. Low to the ground and not climbing the wall you will find what you seek.

The Swimmer:
Heading back to the main drive, trek past the guard shack and head towards the west. Go to the parking lot on your left and take the trail that heads 208° to a clearing. Back in the sixties this was a second beach for Lincoln Woods. Straight ahead is a cemetery, but you want to head to the water. From the edge of the clearing head 129° for 100’ in the base of a hollow giant you will find the Swimmer.

The Jogger:
First pass Start and continue to the Finish Line, keep on going for another 68’. Turn 158° and take the path running, to an intersection you will come. Stay to the right and trot to the top but don’t jog down. Look to your right and under grotto you will finish.

Congrat's to Mystique & Nightcrawler for being the first to complete the series.
