When traveling north on Rte 16:
Upon reaching the intersection of Rte 16 and Rte. 109, take a left heading west. Follow Rte 109 for a bit more than a mile. When you reach THE SHARP CORNER, you will see a white house on your right , a stone wall almost straight ahead and a fence on your left, TURN LEFT by the fence ON TO GOVERNOR RD.
Follow Governors Rd. until you reach a road on the right at which you see a small triangular patch of garden that nestles between the roads (approximately a mile down on Governors Rd). Take that RIGHT. YOU ARE ON MOOSE MTN. RD. Follow Moose Mtn. Rd. past the Justice of the Peace on the right. PASS Tumbledown Dick Rd on your right and Moose Mtn. Recreation a bit further on your left. You will come to an old red house(# 154 ) on your right . This is the last house on Moose Mtn Rd., BUT CONTINUE on your journey straight ahead. The paved road turns to a dirt road. Be warned! The dirt road is not graded and has become deeply rutted in spots. Proceed slowly. PARK in the small lot where you see the Ellis R. Hatch Wildlife Management Area sign. You must continue your journey by foot from here ( about 7/10 of a mile)
Facing the Ellis R. Hatch sign, follow road to the left, going under, over,or around gate. Enjoy the coolserenity of the little stream, with its shaded canopy of trees and verdant, mossy bank.

Once you've passed the gate, follow the ragged road about 100 feet to where a road angles to the left. Follow that road. You can see that at one time it was a functioning car road , but is now grown over - but easily traversed nonetheless. Travel up this road which will turn to the right. It will not be very long before the ground to your right rises above the road. You will see a stone wall. Where there is a break in the wall , there will be a short, narrow path . Go up that path , pass between the stones of the wall. You are now standing in the Hanson cemetery.

Standing in front of the Tobias "Bear" Hanson marker look over your left shoulder. You should see a slanting rock within the stonewall, with two smaller rocks beneath it. Here is where you will find that which you seek.

If you choose to continue your hike further up the mountain, there is another letterbox a small distance away ( about 10 minutes or so ). To reach it leave the cemetery as you came in and continue right. The overgrown road that you'd been following will rejoin the ragged road that you'd begun hiking on. Continue your upward journey following the letterbox clues for Moose Mountain Madeline at the point in the directions where it says, "upward and onward".

IF traveling South along Rte.16, take a RIGHT at the intersection of Rte 16 and Rte 109. Then follow above directions from the turn.
