Along the Parkway about Milepost 86 is The Peaks of Otter. Thomas Jefferson once wrote that "the mountains of the Blue Ridge, and of these the Peaks of Otter, are thought to be of a greater height, measured from their base, than any others in our country, and perhaps in North America." Of course this later turned out not to be the case, but not before Virginia had sent stones from the peaks to be its part of the Washington Monument. To locate this box find the place where you can hike to the summit or take the bus up. There is a nature center there. As you approach the trailhead there is a kiosk on the right at the top of a few steps. After reading the kiosk look up and spy a gravel road heading off the mountain, about a quarter mile or less down this road on the left is a spot to pull off near a rock outcropping. About 30 feet to the Left of the Largest rock you'll see a row of very tall poplars with some Large Potato looking rocks at the base of the first tree. Under SPOR is box.
