UPDATE 4/30/06: ALL THREE LETTERBOXES ARE NOW MISSING :(

UPDATE (10/18/03): THE WHITE WITCH AND ASLAN WERE WASHED AWAY IN THE FLOOD LAST WEEK. LUCY IS STILL IN PLACE.

Difficulty: Easy. The vast majority of the trails are paved, with no major elevation changes. Round trip hike slightly less than 2 miles. Compass and your own stamp pads required. If you own binoculars, you may wish to bring them along for wildlife watching. Starting point Great Plains Nature Center, 6232 E. 29th St. North (just west of 29th and Woodlawn) in Wichita. Get more detailed directions and information at http://www.gpnc.org. From the parking lot, go toward the nature center. If it’s open, you may wish to stop in and purchase turtle food for use during the hike and/or look at the exhibits. Begin your search in the gazebo at the trailhead. Here you can orient yourself to the trails.

LUCY AT THE LAMPPOST “Next moment, she found that what was rubbing against her face and hands was not soft fur, but something hard and rough and even prickly. … Lucy felt a little frightened, but she felt very inquisitive and excited as well. … As she stood looking at it, wondering why there was a lamppost in the middle of a wood and wondering what to do next, she heard a pitter-patter of feet coming toward her.” From The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis

From “dawn to dusk,” walk 20 pavements. Spy a “watcher in the wood” to the right of the trail; go to it. From this point, take 14 paces at 10 degrees. What you seek is concealed beneath an evergreen tree here. Please be discreet while stamping in, and check visibility after replacing.

THE WHITE WITCH “When once Aslan had been tied (and tied so that he was really a mass of cords) on the flat stone, a hush fell on the crowd. Four Hags, holding four torches, stood at the corners of the Table. The Witch bared her arms as she had bared them the previous night … Then she began to whet her knife.” From The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis

Back on the trail, pass Jesse Chisholm. At the fork in the road, avoid red. Cross the marshes via a boardwalk (this is a good place to use some turtle food, if you purchased any… but save some for later, too!). Keep your eyes open for egrets, herons, and muskrats. Continue to another parting of the ways, remaining on Aslan’s Golden Path. Immediately to your left, find the “Stone Table.” Have a seat on it and take a compass reading of 12 degrees. What you seek is 8 paces in this direction, beneath the 4th and 5th slats on the left side. Again, discretion is a virtue. Please be sure the box is wedged in well when you replace it.

ASLAN “Safe? ‘Course he isn’t safe. But he’s good. He’s the King.” “And Aslan stood up and when he opened his mouth to roar his face became so terrible that they did not dare to look at it. And they saw all the trees in front of him bend before the blast of his roaring as grass bends in a meadow before the wind.” From The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis

Continue across the bridge, always keeping to Aslan’s Golden Path. Pass two “no fishing” signposts. When the trail enters the woods, look for a tunnel of trees to the south. Walk through the tunnel until you see a new path on your left, a tree on your right, and the creek(bed) before you. Find the king of the multi-trunked trees; what you seek is in the center of his trunks beneath bark and branches. Please replace the camouflage carefully when you are finished.

Back on the path, continue in the same direction. The trail will loop back to your starting point. Just before you arrive back at the nature center, you will find another boardwalk across the creek. This is a great spot for wildlife watching; use your turtle food here!
