Though a prolific poet whose works celebrated the common beauty of the natural world as well as his religious faith, Kilmer is remembered most for a short poem entitled "Trees", which was published in 1914. He was killed at the Second Battle of the Marne in 1918 at the age of 31, but his memory lives on in places dedicated to him, like Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest, where this letterbox resides.
Directions:
From Robbinsville, take Highway 129 North for 1½ miles to the junction with Highway 143 West. Turn left and proceed West on Highway 143 (Cherohala Hwy) and look for signs to Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest.
Clues:
Find the Lower Loop trail and cross bridge, going clockwise on the loop .5 mile to the Joyce Kilmer Memorial Plaque. After reading it, turn right and walk 15 steps to the trunk-end of a large, fallen tree. Turn left and follow the tree 5 steps to a log laying under it. The letterbox is in the middle of the log under rocks and sticks. Please be discreet and replace as described.
