On the faraway island of Nantucket, the Nantucket Conservation Foundation has set aside some beautiful wilderness for the enjoyment of all. The Sanford Farm is one of these areas and can be found off Madaket Road just before it joins with Cliff Road. Dogs on leashes are permitted but you are asked to clean up after them. This is a great ride for horses or mountainbikes.

Walk through the turnstile and down the dusty road. On your right you will pass an old silo with a storyboard. Keep on to the fork in the road - head left toward the little pine forest. Pass through the forest and watch toward the left for a post and wire erosion protector. This is only 25-30 feet or so past the fringe of the forest. Walk up to the wire and check out the view across the pond (Head of Hummock Pond). Notice the "porch" on top of the house across the pond - this is called a widow's walk. Widow's walks were built on townhouses so that the wives of the whaling captains and whaling crews could watch for their husbands returns. When a mate or captain had died or been lost at sea the ships would fly a black flag so occasionally the wives would learn that they or one of the other wives were now a widow up on the widow's walk.

Your treasure is very close now. From where you stand there is a pine tree on the right and one on the left. You should go to the left pine and look under a small rock. This is a microbox so make sure you have a stamppad or marker.

Once you have concluded your business you can go back to the parking lot or follow the road to see more storyboards, Hummock Pond and eventually (2 or 3 miles) the sea.
