This series was created for my 5-year-old son, as a tribute to one of his favourite stories and movies (loosely based on the Frank L. Baum book and Judy Garland movie). It works best if you walk it, rather than bike or drive it, and takes about 2 hours to do the full loop on foot.

First of all, you will need a good map of “Oz”: [http://vancouver.ca/parks/parks/stanley/pdf/stanleypark_printable.pdf].

Start your journey at the Children’s Farmyard Café, the concession stand near the children’s farmyard. A good spot to park is in the parking lot near the miniature train and farmyard – when you enter Stanley Park, follow the signs to the train and farmyard, go north along Pipeline Road past the bus loop, and turn right into the parking lot. Note that you must pay a fee to park your car.

From the parking lot, make your way towards the concession stand by the children’s farmyard.

BOX #1: DOROTHY AND TOTO

Once upon a time, there was a girl named Dorothy and she lived in a place called Kansas, on a farm. This is her “house” (point to the concession stand) and her farm. She lived here with her Aunt Em, her uncle Henry, her little dog Toto, and of course, all of the animals on the farm. Facing the biggest window of the “house” (the concession window), if you go to the right and peek through the fence, you may be able to see some of these animals. But if you go to the left instead, you may find Dorothy and Toto playing around there. Just a few paces away, you’ll see that there is a small white and grey stone wall on that side of the “house”, with a large wood and wire fence up behind it. Can you find the largest brown rock in the stone wall? Just above it is a small white cement-like rock. Lift it up to find Dorothy and Toto. Be discrete, as this is a busy area, and make sure that they are nice and cozy and well hidden when you put them back!

BOX #2: MUNCHKIN AND THE GOOD WITCH OF THE NORTH (NB. This box is currently missing, but will hopefully be replaced soon!)

Dorothy was a bit sad because her Aunt Em and uncle Henry were always very busy working on the farm and she wished that she had someone to play with. She wished that she could go over the rainbow to a land far far away where everybody was happy.

She went into her house to dream about going to this faraway place. Suddenly, the wind began to blow and it blew so hard that it turned into a big spiralling tornado that picked up her house and flew it up into the sky! Quick, follow the path of the tornado! You need to go back past the “house” and the fence of the farm. Ahead is a fork in the path, marked by a boulder in the grass between the paths. One path veers left along the farm’s fence, but you want to take the path on the right, the one that has a stump up ahead on the left and a stream to the right.

The tornado and Dorothy’s house flew right over the stream, all the way to another land: a wonderful place called the Land of Oz. Do you know how to get there? You have to go over the stream. Continue up ahead and cross over a small wooden bridge on your right.

Just like you, Dorothy and Toto were blown right over the stream, into the Land of Oz. Dorothy was very frightened, but soon the house landed again. When she stepped out of her house, she realized that she was not in Kansas anymore! There were lots of tiny people singing all around her, and they were celebrating! A beautiful lady appeared and she told Dorothy that they were in the Land of Oz and that she was the Good Witch of the North. All of the little people were called Munchkins and they were happy because Dorothy’s house had landed right on top of the Wicked Witch of the East. She had been very mean and now she could no longer hurt the Munchkins and the people of Oz.

Can you find the Munchkins and the Good Witch of the North celebrating near where Dorothy’s house landed? Just over the bridge, follow the path to a small roundabout circle with paths going left and right. You’ll see a gazebo up ahead in the distance (bus loop). Take the path to the left. There's a split in the path up ahead - you can either go straight here or go right and back. There's a clearing with several trees on your left, with one big smooth cement-looking tree in the centre. Go to the right of this tree and all the way to the back of the clearing on the right. As you near the the end of this clearing, there is a decaying stump on your right. Turn right and face this stump. Circle over to the left of the stump. You'll notice how the barkless wood curves so beautifully at the base. Just up and to the left of this part of the stump is a hole in the stump filled with crumbly bark. Pull out the bark to find the Good Witch of the North and one of the Munchkins celebrating there! Be extra careful to hide them well when you put them back.

BOX #3: SCARECROW

Dorothy was glad that the Munchkins were so happy but she was worried about Aunt Em and Uncle Henry and she wanted to go back home. The Good Witch of the North told Dorothy to wear the Wicked Witch of the East’s silver shoes and then to follow the yellow brick road all the way to the Emerald City. In the Emerald City was a great man called the Wizard of Oz, and he would be able to grant her wish to go home again.

So off Dorothy went with Toto down the yellow brick road. Can you find the yellow brick road? Go back onto the path that you were on and go left. This road isn’t yellow, but can you see the square bricks lining the edges of the path?

As Dorothy and Toto walked along the brick road, suddenly they heard somebody whistling. Dorothy looked around but couldn’t see anyone. Then she looked up and noticed that there was a scarecrow hanging from a pole. Can you see the scarecrow?

He’s just up ahead. Can you see a big circular roundabout at the end of the path in front of you? About 20-30 paces before you get to the roundabout, see if you can spot a large barkless tree on your left, which is carved with graffiti and looks like it is made of concrete. Step over the low bushes and circle over to the side of the tree that is furthest away from the path. Facing that side of the tree, if you look down a little to your left, in a hole at the base of the tree, you may find the scarecrow hanging there, behind bark and leaves. Make sure to cover him up well when you put him back! And be careful to be as discrete as you can - this is a very busy spot! It's probably easiest if only one person looks for the box by the tree while others stand guard along the path.

BOX #4: TIN MAN

The Scarecrow started to talk when he saw Dorothy and he asked her to take him down from the pole. The Scarecrow was all wobbly as he walked. He told Dorothy that he wasn’t very smart because he didn’t have any brains. He only had straw in his head. So Dorothy decided that the Scarecrow should come with her to see the Wizard of Oz so that the Wizard could give the Scarecrow some brains. So off they went together down the road! First it was a big, main road, but then it started to wind into the forest. Can you follow the same road that Dorothy and the Scarecrow did?

Go back onto the path and down to the big roundabout. Take the path to the right, marked by the green sign that says Information, Horse Drawn Tours, and Rowing Club. As you walk in that direction, you’ll see a sign on your left that says Urban Pollution and Streams. At this sign, take the path that goes left, over the stream over a small bridge with two small wooden beams on the edges and a metal grid over the boards. Notice a small path there that goes to the right, immediately after the bridge. As Dorothy and the Scarecrow approached this same spot, suddenly they heard someone saying “Help!” but there was nothing moving in the forest. Suddenly, they noticed a rusted old statue made out of tin that looked like a man, and they realized he was talking! But he was too rusty to move, so they grabbed an oil can nearby and squirted some oil on him so that he could move again. Can you find the Tin Man?

At the entrance to this path on your right is a large rock on the side of the path closest to you, and a large tree with a massive base in a grove of rhododendrons across from the rock on the other side of the path. Duck under the rhododendrons and circle to the other side of the trunk. At the base is a hole covered by large branches and rocks. The Tin Man waits for you there. Be sure to hide him really well when you put him back.

BOX #5:COWARDLY LION

The Tin Man said that he could not love because he didn’t have a heart. His tin chest was empty inside. So Dorothy decided that the Tin Man should come with them to see the Wizard of Oz so that the Wizard could give the Tin Man a heart. So off they went together down the road!

Go back to the path and now follow this path along the stream, past a tall stump on your left. When you get to the paved path up ahead, you’ll see a bench just on your left. Take the forest path between the bench and the fallen log next to it. Continue to follow the forest path along the stream. You will come out onto the old polar bear den. As Dorothy and her friends approached this place, the Scarecrow told Dorothy that the bears that used to live here had escaped into the forest. The woods were full of bears, and tigers and lions too, said the Tin Man. Dorothy exclaimed “Lions and Tigers and Bears! Oh my!!”. They decided to leave the bear den to get as far away from danger as possible! You should too! Take the paved uphill path to the left of the den. At the intersection, go left and over the bridge with the cement pillars and black iron railings. There is a roundabout intersection up ahead – keep going straight.

As the paved path curves uphill toward the left, there is a small plaque commemorating the centenary of Vancouver. As you read it, look ahead and to your right. Suddenly Dorothy and her friends heard a great big roar!! Can you see what made that noise? Walk over to it. With your back to him, notice a V-shaped tree and a grove of ferns and rhododendrons behind it. Enter the grove - there are ferns on your left and twisted rhododendron branches on your right. There are two rocks on the ground to your left, as the hill goes down. Under the pointy one is the lion's den. Lift up the rock to find him, and hide him well when you're done.

BOX #6: WIZARD OF OZ

Suddenly the big lion jumped out and he chased poor little Toto! Dorothy got mad at the lion for chasing Toto and she told him he was being mean. The lion started to cry… He said that he was a Cowardly Lion and was scared of everything. He didn’t have any courage. So Dorothy decided that the Cowardly Lion should come with them to see the Wizard of Oz so that the Wizard could give the Cowardly Lion some courage. So off they went together down the road!

Go back to the paved path and keep going left, as the path curves up the hill. At the intersection, go straight, and then keep sticking to the left-most path as you walk past the Stanley Park Pavilion, Theatre Under the Stars/Malkin Bowl, and up toward the main road. At the metal pole at the top of the path, go left towards the water fountain. There is a sign on your left that says Wildlife in the City. Go to that sign, and then look up. Can you see the green roof up ahead? That’s Emerald City!!

Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion finally found Emerald City! Now it was time to meet the Wizard of Oz. Can you find the Wizard? Keep going along this path, past 5 benches on your right. A path goes right, but you must continue straight. When you reach the path to the playground going right, a tall bushy conifer tree stands to your left, next to the green lamppost. This is the Wizard's massive green throne. If this path going right is 12 o'clock on a clock, go around to the other side of the tree at about 7 o'clock. There is a small opening that allows you to crawl under this big bushy tree. Look for 2 small rocks on the ground. Dig under there to find the Wizard, but make sure noone sees you and hide him well again when you put him back.

BOX #7: WICKED WITCH OF THE WEST

When Dorothy and her friends finally met the Wizard of Oz, they were a bit frightened. The Wizard had a loud scary voice and he looked like a big face floating above his chair. But he was glad that Dorothy had stopped the Wicked Witch of the East from hurting all of the people of Oz. The Wizard of Oz told them that there was another witch, the Wicked Witch of the West, who was still being mean to everyone. He asked Dorothy and her friends if they could stop the Wicked Witch of the West from hurting the people of Oz. If they did, then he would grant their wishes.

So Dorothy, Toto, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion headed off to find the Wicked Witch of the West’s castle. It’s a long way to get there… First you need to take the path to the playground. Go past the 4 benches, and you'll reach an intersection with a path going left, and two going right. Go right, but not on the path immediately to your right - take the path going right that is just a bit further away from you. As you walk straight along this path, you will reach the rose garden.

Now the Wicked Witch of the West could see in her crystal ball that Dorothy and her friends were coming this way too and so she put a magic spell on all the flowers in the garden. The smell of the flowers made Dorothy and the Cowardly Lion very sleepy and soon they fell down on the ground, fast asleep. Luckily, the flowers didn’t affect the Tin Man and the Scarecrow so they carried Dorothy and the Lion through the garden until they were able to wake up again. You need to leave the garden quickly so you don’t fall asleep!

At the next intersection, turn right and head towards the Stanley Park Pavilion building up ahead on your left. Facing the front of the building, you need to follow the path on the right side of the building to make your way to the Wicked Witch’s castle. Up ahead you’ll see that gazebo you saw before (bus loop). At the intersection, go right, in the direction of the Aquarium, Horse Drawn Tours, and Brockton – there are two paths going right, but you want the one that DOESN’T have square bricks lining the edges of the path. You’ll walk past a big knobby tree on your left. At the circular intersection, take the path on the right that goes over the wooden bridge. Keep going straight, past the paths going left and right. At the next intersection, go left. There will be a large monument on your right (Japanese Canadian War Memorial). At the circular intersection, there will be two paths going left, a big paved path going right, and a small gravel path going right. You want to take the big paved path going right. Careful! You are approaching the Witch’s “castle” (playground)! Can you see it on your left as you walk? There is a 4-way intersection in the path, with a small dirt path going left toward the castle. Take this path and make your way to the castle.

The Wicked Witch of the West was mad when Dorothy and her friends got to the castle, so she sent her winged monkeys after them! The winged monkeys came shooting out of the green, twisty slidechute. Can you see it? Go stand at the exit to this chute. The winged monkeys shot out and caught Dorothy and her friends and took them to a hidden grove nearby. Standing with your back to the slideshoot exit, there is a conifer tree directly ahead and a grove of trees behind it. Go behind this tree and take the large path that goes into the grove of trees. Just as you enter, notice an old decaying stump on your right that looks like a winged monkey claw. It is rotting from the Wicked Witch's presence there...

When the winged monkeys dropped Dorothy and her friends here, the Wicked Witch of the West jumped out, cackling and threatening to get rid of them all! She was scary and mean... She even tried to put fire on the poor Scarecrow! Dorothy tried to stop the Witch by throwing water on the Witch so that the fire would go out. And when she did that, the Witch melted!! Dorothy had managed to stop the Wicked Witch of the West for good!

Can you find the Wicked Witch of the West melting away? She’s inside that decaying stump, toward the left side, behind a large rock. Be discreet and hide her well when you are done.

Dorothy and her friends were very excited and returned to see the Wizard of Oz. It turns out he wasn’t a big powerful wizard, but just a little man. But he helped each of them realize that they already had found the things they had been looking for all along. The Scarecrow had been very smart and so he clearly had brains. And the Tin Man had been very kind and so he clearly had a heart. And the Cowardly Lion had been very brave and so he clearly had courage. And all Dorothy had to do was click her silver shoes together and say “there’s no place like home”.

To go back to her home, go to the “castle” and take the path behind it, circling back around the fenced off farmyard, back towards the Children’s Farmyard Café concession stand.

Dorothy woke up in Kansas and was very glad to be with her family once again. What an adventure she had had!
