If you know nothing about abalone you might want to read about this interesting and common mollusk:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abalone

When The Olde Oak was much younger and in junior high school she walked to the school bus with a neighbor friend. One afternoon the neighbor asked what the beautiful shells were lining one of the flower beds in front of our family’s home.

“Abalone,” I said.

“Abalone?” she asked.

“Yes, abalone,” I answered.

“Wow, “ she responded.

“Yup” I answered her.

The next day my mother received a phone call from the friend’s mother giving my mother a tongue lashing about my telling her daughter all sorts of fanciful tales about baloney coming in beautiful shells. In seems my friend went home and would not leave her mother alone until they too bought their baloney in exotic shells.

OK, then.

Proceed to the village of Mendocino on Highway 1 and find Little Lake Street. Drive down Little Lake until you are in Mendocino Headlands State Park and almost to the Pacific Ocean. The road then curves to the right and within a few hundred feet on the ocean side of the road look for a red and white sign warning of danger. Find a parking spot and walk directly across the street from the red and white cautionary sign until you reach a horizontal pole. Stop. Face the pole, turn to your left and count to the fourth pole from there. On the near side of that pole under the front side is a space. And in that space should be the Mendocino Baloney Letterbox.

Please close securely to guard against a letterbox’s worst enemy after mankind, moisture!
