Start your hike at the Beaver Meadow Visitor Center located at 1610 Welch Rd in North Java, NY. You may grab a Homestead Trail booklet inside the Center to make your adventure more complete or download the podcast from www.beavermeadow.com. Take the Chipmunk Run trail to the right of the Visitor Center down to the Beaver Pond dock. At this point you will find the Old Homestead Trail. Follow the Old Homestead Trail up the hill and past the sugar bush with the towering maples. Imagine along your hike how things used to be when the preserve was a farm. Pass the trailside museum on the right, but keep on the Hometead Trail hugging the woods. You will pass the Grandpa Tree and the upright pile of larch branches showing how old fence posts were dried in the old days. You will shortly come to a trail on the left which leads to an old foundation. Enter the foundation from the left side and find the box hidden under some rocks in the corner.
