LAIKA LETTERBOX
Laika's Story
Laika was the first living creature to orbit space, launched from Earth by the Russians in 1957. She was a three year old mixed breed stray dog. Her real name was Kudryavka, which means "Little Curly", but she was referred to as Laika (which is the Russian word for "barker")
Laika was sent into space in a pressurized cabin within the spacecraft. She was attached to life support instruments used to monitor her vital signs, and was secured in place with a special harness.
It is unknown how long she survived in space. Some theories suggest that she survived for as long as ten days. Other information suggests that she died from high temperatures the day after launch when her capsule bounced off the atmosphere and failed to seperate from the booster rocket, rendering the thermal control inoperative.
