A History Lesson

This is a micro box. Be sure to bring your own ink pad and a pen and paper. Large stamps may not fit on our roll of paper. Please rehide the box well and use caution! People frequently visit and fish in the area.

Take I-75 to the Elm Ave. exit. Follow Elm Ave. west. The letterbox is hidden approximately 5 miles from the expressway (about a 12 minute drive). You will pass the River Raisin Battlefield on your right soon after passing Detroit Avenue. Continue west on Elm. In about 1.2 miles, you will find St. Mary’s Catholic Church on the corner of Elm and Monroe. Across the street is the Custer Statue, erected in honor of General George Custer. Continue west on Elm.

Once you hit Telegraph Road, Elm turns into North Custer Road. Continue past Munson Park and Custer Airport. Just past Munson Park, at 3048 N. Custer is Custer’s old farm. Almost one mile after the Custer farm, you’ll find the Martha Barker County Store on the corner of N. Custer and S. Raisinville. Stop here for your lesson on some Monroe history!

Park in the gravel lot by the schoolhouse. Get out and look around. Read about the Old Papermill School. If the museum is open, stop in and buy some penny candy. Proceed behind the schoolhouse to the star and listen to the automated teacher. Press the button to learn about one of the oldest buildings still standing in Michigan. Be sure to pay close attention! If you miss something, you may have to listen to the lecture again.

Make note of the year that John Anderson sold the building for the second time. Time for some arithmetic! Write down the year and add the 4 digits together, then divide by the number of benches sitting by the podium (Example: 1999. 1 + 9 + 9 + 9 = 28. 28 divided by ___ = your answer). You will need this number for a future clue.

After listening and learning the history, proceed down the path to the east and follow it over the bridge to the first exhibit. Find the bullet hole and bullet that was found in the 1977 repairs. Facing this bullet hole, turn north toward N. Custer Rd. and proceed around to the other side of the building the number of steps that you calculated earlier.

After walking around the building, turn to face east and walk forward approximately 6 steps to peer into the past. Don’t leave too quickly. Turn around, face west and step down two steps. Sit down and take a break. Behind you, underneath the steps, the letterbox is hidden under some rocks. Inside the box, you’ll find that your hard work paid off! Good work!

Please rehide well.
