Last Feb. I was going to FL with my family and we stopped and did a letter box at a rest area. I loved it and thought it was a great idea. A good way for the kids (and us) to get out of the car for a short exercise period and a little fun.
My dearest friend's father went home to be with the Lord back in Sept. and I thought it would be a great way to honor his memory to do a letter box in his name.
Frank J. Wojciechowski
I also thought I'd put some fun facts in it for the kids to get their minds off the nintendo's and dvd's for awhile.
You will find this letterbox at the first rest area coming into PA northbound on I-81 right about mile marker one. My friend Pastor Frank served 20 yrs. in the Air Force and did a tour in Vietnam, so I thought this would be perfect as you are just coming off the Vietnam Veteran's Highway in MD and joining the American Legion Highway in PA. (Did you know the American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a Patriotic Veteran's Organization and now has a post in each of the 50 states as well as Puerto Rico, Mexico, France, and the Philippines?)
As you get close to the rest area I want to tell you a little more about Pastor Frank. When he was called to go to Vietnam, he trained with eleven other men and they all went together. When they got to Vietnam every one of the eleven were cut dfferent orders than Pastor Frank. He alone was assigned to a different base while the others went together. Not long after they had arrived, Pastor Frank recieved word that all eleven of his friends had been killed together in combat. You know God's Word says, "It is appointed unto men once to die and after this the judgment."Heb.9:27 All of us have an appointment with death and it's one appointment that cannot be postponed or changed.
Well, you should be there by now. Go past the info center and park on the north side. Go to the handicapped table. You wll see two rocks side by side. Use your imagation to say what they look like. I think the one on the right looks like a lioness so I'm going to say the other one looks like a lamb. God's Word says in the future Millenial Kingdom the lion will lie down with the lamb.
Go and stand on the other side of the lioness an look to your right. You will see a shed directly behind the building. Walk to the shed and stand on the left corner facing south. You will see a macadam sidewalk. ( Have you ever heard the name McAdam for pavement? He was the man responsible for the greatest advancements to road construction in history. Although today we use asphalt, John McAdam pioneered better surfacing on walkways and roads.)
Go to the sidewalk and turn left on it. Go over the small hill and when you get to the bottom just before the gate out to the road, stop and turn rt. The second tree down the grass is a weeping willow. Probably 120ft. Go to the willow and stand on the south side slightly facing I-81. (Did you know the willow tree is the most easily recognized deciduous tree there is? It can grow up to 8 ft. a yr.making it a beautiful fast growing shade tree. It needs a lot of room as it's roots will damage pipes so it's not a good tree to put close to your house. It's good this one is way out here!)
Now look over and see two large rocks. Walk toward the rocks and concentrate on the one on the left. As you get closer you will see 3 in a row. (By the way, these rocks are limestone. Limestone is made of the mineral calcite. The primary source of calcite is marine organisms. Wait a minute, that means this area has been covered in water. No surprise there, we know the entire earth was covered by water in the universal flood of Noah's day.)
Search around the first rock and you will find out a little more about Pastor Frank's life and hopefully a little more about yours.
Happy letterboxing
