Difficulty - Easy
Terrain - Easy. Take bicycles if you want to. This is a great family outing
Maps are available at www.exploringthenorth.com

Watch for signs along U.S. 2. From the intersection of Main and U.S.2 in Norway it is 2 miles West to Pine Creek Road. Coming East out of Iron Mountain, from the intersection of U.S.2 and 141 it is 3.8 miles to Pine Creek Road.

Turn North (the only way you can go) on Pine Creek Road and go for 1.2 miles. You will see the sign on the left for Fumee Lake Natural Area. This will take you to the East parking lot. There is an information sign near the start of the tril and several maps posted at intersections of the trail.

From the gate take the trail to the first fork. Go to the right, keeping the lake to the left. Watch for wildlife along the trail. We have observed small birds too numerous to list here, otter, loons, deer and one bear.

Continuing on you will pass a small white cement building. This pump house, and others that are about, attest to the fact that at one time this was the reservoir for Norway's drinking water. Go past this building to the next fork. Go left. This trail take you between the big Fumee Lake on your right and the little Fumee Lake on your left.

After crossing a small creek that joins the two lakes you will come to yet another fork in the trail. Go left again and continue along the edge of the lake until you come to another white cement pump house. Go down the little hill to the pump house and and continue along the lake shore. There is a bench along here if you want to take a break. You are getting close now.

From the bench continue along past the big rock at the edge of the lake, and bear to the right around the corner and up the hill to the cabin. Go to the SW corner of the cabin, and at a compass bearing of 250°, go 7 paces. You should find the box easily.

After stamping up and replacing the box, take the trail that goes straight away from the front of the cabin back to the parking lot.
